Ok- I finally got some advice to use haircolor remover on hair rather than Bleach because it is less hard on the hair. So, I really need to know if anyone knows of some really good haircolor remover products? Please let me know soon. Thanks Cheers***  ------------- Rose |

Try Jheri Redding One 'n Only Colorfix. It's $12 (more or less) at Sally's and has enough for 2-6 applications. Basically, you mix 2 solutions and saturate the hair, cover it with plastic (tipping caps are almost perfect for the job), and let it work for 20-30 minutes. You wash it off, let the hair dry, then apply a third solution, wait 5 minutes, and wash it off. It works by reversing the chemical reaction that colored the hair in the first place so the dye molecules will liquefy and wash away. THE GOOD: it does very little damage to the hair. THE BETTER: it softens the new growth so it will take color almost as well as the already-colored growth. THE BAD: You have to wait a few hours before re-coloring, because all your scalp oil will be washed away while doing the color removal. Unless, of course, you don't mind dark stains that'll last longer than the color on the hair THE UGLY: It works almost PERFECTLY for demi-permanent and oxidative semi-permanent color (Clairol Complements Semi, Clairol Second Nature, etc.), but won't help much with permanent color (like Miss Clairol), and probably won't do a thing for non-oxidative color (like the direct dyes in Feria). The problem with permanent color is that the Colorfix liquefies the dye inside the hair shaft, but the color molecules themselves are perfectly content to stay put and remain inside -- oxidizing right back to their original color the moment they come in contact with peroxide. THE SERENDIPITOUS: it's not a bleach, and officially doesn't lighten hair, but let me put it this way: after using it weekly along with Clairol Complements semi-permanent haircolor, my naturally level-3 brown hair is slightly orange-gold after using the Colorfix. Somewhere along the line, something is lifting the natural color, and I think the Colorfix is more responsible than the Semi-permanent Complements. ------------- |

Well, now I know what I did wrong! I used Colorfix this afternoon (my hair had been black for the past 3 years). It worked about as well as I figured it would with 2 applications....making my hair a dark chestnut-like auburn color. Very pretty, but I was going for something lighter. So, I read at the bottom of the instructions the following: "Rinse well. Dry hair with a warm heat setting. You may now proceed with you color application, if performing a full color corrective service." So, I figured I could go right ahead and try to go a shade or 2 lighter today. WRONG!! I just got out of the shower and my hair is now black with a red streak down the middle where the new growth is. Bleh. That bit at the end of the directions was a bit misleading and didn't give quite enough information. I definitely think they should add something to the effect of not being able to use hair colors which contain peroxide. Bleh again. So, how long ought I to wait before I can use Colorfix (I've only done it twice and my hair is in excellent condition still)? I think I'm just going to go with that again and then be a bit wiser with my newfound knowledge of the stuff before I jump right in and decide to color it. |

Sorry for the ~triple~ post.... But I am in need of help and I'm not getting any responses. I've used colorfix on my hair and it's worked reasonably well. My hair is now a dark auburn/reddish-brown color, but I'm looking to go to a lighter red/dark strawberry blonde. The problem is, every time I do a strand test (and in the first case, colored my whole head of hair)...my hair goes back to an almost black color. What's the problem here? Is it the peroxide in the hair color? At this very moment, I'm strand testing Clairol Loving Care medium reddish brown (745). It was the only color that I could find that didn't contain peroxide. If this doesn't do the job, what are some suggestions? I've never used anything other than color in a box from Wal-mart, etc. ... EDIT>>> As I suspected, Loving Care did absolutely nothing. At least it's cheap. |

You did the last step, right? You added the peroxide that comes
in the ColorFix box (bottle #3), let it sit on your hair for five
minutes, and your color didn't darken one bit? Because is sounds
like the permanent hair color is reoxidising to black, meaning you
haven't removed it all yet. Also, if you want a light red-brown, then buy a red-blonde shade, not medium red-brown. Your hair is now very porous and likely (as you have seen) to come out much darker than you want. You may still need another round of colorfix first...it depends partly on your natural color, but most people get to a medium orange when they're through with colorfix. |

Yup. I did the last step and I shampooed my hair twice after using
colorfix to make sure it was all out. And after I'd used the peroxide,
my hair darkened slightly, but not much at all. I went to Sally's today and the girl there first recommended colorzap. I said no because I've read it's very harsh on your hair. So she then suggested I use Ion crystal clarifying treatment and dawn dish soap followed by a deep conditioner. Right now I'm deep conditioning and plan to leave the treatment on for another 15 minutes (it's already been on for 15). I've already used colorfix as much as I think I ought to (already more than is recommended). My natural color is a light caramel brown (I'm assuming...because when I started coloring my hair some 7 years ago it was dark blonde and had been getting darker every year. Nobody in my family -- not even grandparents -- have blonde hair.) The first color that I bought and tried was a medium red-brown. The second and third were strawberry blonde and all but the Loving Care ("Loving Crap" as I tend to call it!  ) redarkened it. Loving Care did absolutely nothing, as I had expected.So....yeah... I guess I'll soon see how the clarifying treatment and dawn worked.... ...... ......... Would it help if I used a protein filler before coloring? |

Go ahead and use that protein filler. Get the clear one. It's definitely what you need for porous hair. -------------

My hair is still very dark brown-red.... So, say I decided to use colorzap.... Since I've already removed a good portion of the black dye, would I have to leave it on as long as the directions said? I really am scared of damaging my hair and then having to cut the damage off as I've been growing it for ~3 years~.... Only minimal trimming in those 3 years too. And it's still in great condition. I've treated my hair as if it's my own child my whole life and I don't want to screw it up. It's finally down to my natural waistline and I don't want to do something that I'm going to regret..... |

alright since you are trying to save your hair I have abit of advice.I myself opted not to use colorzap.i tried it on test strands and I didnt like the fact that it seemed to work like bleach.So Instead I used swarzkopf Phantom(modulat).Its sulfur based.you leave it on for the recommended time and then it shampoos out.I was left with no damage.It costs $23.Which I know most people are paying around $5 for colorfixes.Which is okay.But I wanted to make sure my hair came out the healthiest possible.Please dont use colorzap.Another option you might seek is a stylist licensed in color correcting.If your hair is as important as I think it is then money shouldnt be an issue.With hair as long as your you take big risks using any chemical treatment.It would be best to get it done right so you dont get a chemical haircut .Good luck.-------------

Where can I buy Phantom? Do they have it at Sally's?? EDIT>>> The problem with going to a color correction specialist is that I really don't have the money for that right now. I'm travelling (have travelled) to several festivals and concerts this summer and I've had to spend money on camping, hotels, gas, and tickets. |

here is the link.just search for Swarzkopf.I used it with a a cap and heat.And I used 2 boxes.I think it wouldnt be a horrible idea to save your money for the salon.It may take awhile,but you could save your hair this way.Plus as much as two boxes will cost you,you might as well go to color correctionist.

I went to a salon and got some highlights today to break it up. Looks
pretty good and my hair is still in good condition. I'll just have to
deep condition a lot for the next few days and it should be back to
normal. |

Yup. It's worked out quite well for me. I also just got done using a
red tinted protein filler and it made my hair look a bit more
reddish....of course. hehe Anyone know how long the color from protein fillers lasts? And the next time I go back to the salon to get touchups on my highlights, more of the dark brown-red will get the chance to be highlighted since you can't pick out all the same strands. :) Slowly, but surely, I will get red hair. So long as it's before the second weekend of September. I want to have red hair when I go see DMB at ~Red Rocks~.    |
