my mother and i have the same color hair (dark brown) - my mother has been dying her hair for years with single process clairol, l'oreal, etc. she uses any light blonde color and her hair comes out -light blonde (not red)
when i try this i get the inevitable red hair
WHY?
can anyone explain this

Could it be genetics? Does your dad's side of the family also have dark hair, but maybe with a red undercast? Or your mother has a family member whose hair is similarly dark, but has the same undercast? Could age, previous dying, hair texture play a role?

You eat too much red cheese. Eat white cheddar instead.

I know you say your mom has been doing hers for years, but is she grey or white underneath the chemical color? If she's grey &/or white, that could explain it. We don't know how old you and she are...I hear so many women say "I don't even know what my natural color is anymore, I've been coloring for so many years". Just a thought.
