I've colored my hair 2 times so far in my life (Shocking anybody?) so far and I'm not exactly sure what I should be concerned about in terms of coloring my hair. What type of side effects are there?
By adding chemicals to my hair, would I be increasing the chances of losing the pigment in my original hair color?
What hair care products are recommended for treating colored hair?
How often should one be going to get his hair colored?
Yet another stupid question, this term people on the forums use, "fry" as in to fry your hair because of hair coloring, what exactly is this supposed to mean?

Coloring your hair does change the pigementation in your hair inorder to get the color you want. It either adds it or takes it away depending on how light or dark you go. However, it does not alter the color of the hair growing out of your head. That will stay the same. Hair dye only changes hair that's already grow out.
Coloring your hair does damage it because in order for the color to be deposited and for it to stay the hair shaft opens up, the color is placed there and then it closes. Typically the hair shaft doesn't close completely to the original healthy state it was in which is considered damaged hair. There are different levels of hair damage however. Many people dye their hair in order to gain body and fullness which is accomplished when the hair shaft is "ruffled" during the coloring process.
How often you'll need to touch up your roots (do not recolor your entire head of hair when only the roots need it) depends on how fast your hair grows. Four to six weeks is typically the amount of time one can go w/out needing the roots retouched. When you retouch your roots just place the color on the area of hair close to your scalp that is your original color. Let that process. Comb the color through the rest of your hair for the last 5 min to refresh your color.
When your hair is "fried" it means that it's pretty frizzy, dry and probably has tons of split ends. Not a very desirable quality. It just happens when you do too many chemical processes to your hair or heat style your hair too much. Anything that causes damange to your hair can possibly "fry" it. Deep conditioners help prevent that from happening.
There are many different products out there for colored hair. The easiest way to find one that works for you is trial and error. Look for the shampoos and conditioners that say they're for color treated hair. They usually have sun protectants in them to help fading and conditioners to help smooth your hair and make it healthier. If your hair is very damaged a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner could be used. Generally a deep condition treatment should be applied once a week or at least a day before recoloring your hair to prevent it from becoming more damanged.
Hope I helped. Good luck!
