i was walking around in the shopping centre the other day and popped into a beauty salon and asked how much they charged for colour. she asked what colour and i said brown. she looked at my hair and said, no black hair wont hold brown colour at the ends only the roots so it cant be done. she said i could do lots of brown highlights instead though. that doesnt make sense. i didnt know black cant go brown....is this true? thanks in advance

First off, let me give you snaps for going to a pro and not doing anything yourself at home, Dark hair should only be colored by a someone who seriously knows what they're doing. As for what you were told, I think that you need to go to another salon with an experienced colorist. YES!!BLACK HAIR CAN BE COLORED TO ANY SHADE OF BROWN!! or blonde or red for that matter.(although I do not suggest huge color changes, like going from black to platinum blonde, even though it can be done, because of the damage) I know that if you get a great colorist you can have fantastic results!

Heard that L'Oreal has come out with HiColor, especially for dark hair. It can lift at least 3 shades without bleach. But you must go to a salon to have it done. Looks promising. Go to www.sallys.com and search for HiColor and you'll see what I mean. I would NOT attempt this product at home. It just might be what you are looking for.

color cannot just be slathered on to black color hair. it is not as easy as say blonde color hair dyed to a darker, or different, color. To dye black color hair, a bleach process is usually done first, and then whatever color put on (ie red, green, etc.). To make black color to brown, the hair must be bleached, which is what happens when highlights are done.

Yes, I meant the other URL. Have an awful headache today.
Do check out HiColor. I could be reading it wrong, but it's supposed to be something entirely new for black and dark brown hair. According to L'Oreal, it lifts black to medium brown hair 3 to 4 levels without the need to pre-bleach and then deposits the shade of choice. Of course not the lighter shades, but looks like enough of a choice. Here is the exact page:

There's no indication it is meant for African-American or Oriental hair exclusively, as shown by the two models used in the ad. I'm trying to find more info on it myself.
Sounds promising although I believe it has to be used with 40 vol. developer.
Just a thought.

Thanks for all your insights. I dont mean to sound rude and im not implying that you made those comments up, but i think im in denial! LOL I have black hair which has never been coloured so can't they just apply a permanent colour on top? I dont want a light colour, id like a medium to dark brown colour. Please let me know if there is even a slight possiblity they'd do it without bleach b/c i dont want to use bleach so if they do then i guess i wont colour it. thanks in advance

who-ever said that black hair, that wanted to go brown had to be bleached first is so wrong, do not bleach it first, unless the black is color. you can lift it to a brown with color, and to hold the red down use some ash to make a nutral brown

I had something similiar said to me when I wanted to get my tips dyed, but that's only because it'd look a little faded. I had the front of my hair dyed a fairly bright red and it was black beforehand.
Home attempts to dye hair haven't been successful.
