Subject: Need advice on removing brassiness!

I believe what I need is advice on a shampoo or rinse that removes or at least tones down brassiness. Here is my story.

I began with dirty blonde hair and went to a stylist to have my hair colored all over for the first time. I wanted a platinum blonde look, instead I left with major strawberry blonde, way too much red and brassy tones. So I went back and she tried to fix it with another color, then a toner, still left with this brassy head of hair. She said I could go back dark or she could try an ash color, which could leave me with green tones, what??? So today I tried this "white minx" hair rinse that you leave in. It does seem to have toned down the brassiness but it leaves my hair feeling very nasty, not soft or manageable at all so I don't want to use it again. Is there anything I can use, like some sort of shampoo that removes brassiness?? (and doesn't cost an arm and a leg to boot, is this asking too much?)

Thank you for any help you can offer.

I have just gone through something similar. I went from highlights to all over color. Instead of nice blond that would be easier and cheaper to keep up, I got reddish tone on the top. I went back and they tried something lighter. Still brassy so back I go again and they put a toner on it but then it was too dark so next they try chunky highlights. Better but STILL brassy. So I just went back today and she bleached the top and I think finally it is what I wanted. Now as to upkeep, I am not even sure.

Oh ladies, ladies, I feel your pain.... I'm still red/brassy (see "botched" posts). I don't have any advice for you, but just wanted you to know that you don't suffer alone. We should have a party for all of us who are afraid to leave our homes because of our hair. Bet there'd be a lot of red heads/brass bells standing around the punch bowl!

Isn't that the truth! I haven't given up quite yet, still have a few questions to be answered then I may try again, I just don't know! At least we all suffer together.

I haven't used the "white minx" product that you mention. But my sister had good results with something called Wella Color Charm. She needed something to tone down brassiness and this worked well for her. She bought it at Rite Aid so it should be available at most drugstores. She said you shampoo and then apply Wella Color Charm to wet hair. It's a leave-in product. Since it's temporary, you obviously have to reapply it after every shampoo. She says it comes in different colors. My sister did not have any problems with the Wella like you did with the "white minx" leaving your hair feeling unmanageable.

I hope this helps.

Another good idea might be to try a color depositing shampoo and conditioner in ash blonde. ARTec, Redken, Aura, Clairol (Sally Beauty for those last two) and several other salon lines carry such products. Unfortunately it is hard to find color enhancing lines at the drugstore as they are centered primarily in more expensive brands. However, such products can make a subtle difference in hair, especially lighter shades.

I would suggest using both a shampoo and conditioner for counteracting the brasiness because shampoo alone does not do the best job leaving color on the hair shaft. If you use a conditioner and leave it on for 5-10 minutes (the longer the better and with a heating cap is even greater) you might really have some luck!

Julie, I FINALLY got rid of the red/gold "brassy" tone to my hair. I have no idea how light you want to go, but I wanted more of a platinum blonde in lieu of a gold/strawberry blonde. We used Speedlite creme by Wella with 2 activators and 20v developer. Followed it with champagne beige toner by Clairol (violet base) and it is exactly what I wanted!! Thank heaven for the toner, it really took this time and made it just the shade I wanted. Good luck!

Julie, I'm going to jump in here and recommend that you NOT put an all over lightner on your hair. I've seen both of your pic's...before and after.

Putting all over lightner on your hair now, would only take you a step further into future color maintenance hell. Your hair is fixable and you want to keep in mind, what you do now, effects how well (or not) it grows out ....and whether future highlights are what you want them to be. JMO

I didn't necessarily recommend Julie do what I did, I was just letting her know I found something that worked. I haven't seen her pics to know what she has now or before. I was only trying to help. I'm very happy with my results and my hair is not in bad condition now either.

Sorry Vee, I didn't mean to make it sound that way. In my haste, I can really come across too blunt.

No problem Sophie, sometimes I am a bit oversensitive so, I am sure I just went on defense mode when not needed. And you are right, seeing as I haven't seen her pictures or even know much about it, it is good you stepped in. I just know how awful I felt with that red tone and was letting her know what worked for me. I hope she can get it fixed so help her away, I know I was desperate for advice... in fact, I did find it on the message board that Hal spoke of, not sure if it is okay to post that here or not though. Take care.

I know I've posted things here from other sites...maybe not the whole of things, but parts that pertained to what we were discussing here.

I know I'd be interested.

OMG, you got your hair fixed??? Dammit, now I'll be the only one at the punch bowl with ORANGE hair???? LOL. I'm really very happy for you! Lucky, lucky girlie....

I called my old stylist who asked me to get her a list of what they did to me. I did so. When I called back, her machine was on. I left a message a week ago and she hasn't called me back. Gee, ya think she's ignoring me??? You can't blame her -- who wants to fix somebody else's mess??? I'm just stuck with a big fat ugly tuppance colored frickin head, I think.

I took 'em down. I was too embarrassed. That site is my business site and I was afraid that somebody might peek into the index and think, "Hmmm, what's THIS page?"

Sorry Julie i didn't know you took them down.

Any luck finding a good Colorist??

It's so frustrating, hearing some of your stories...especially when it comes to Salon/Stylist disasters.

My Salon is very small...only 5 of us, and I'am the only one in the Salon who does Corrective Color work.....although 2 of the others are perfectly capable of it...they really don't have the patience.

I know it's frustrating for many of you too, having had bad experiences in salon situations. Right now there is no gaurenteed way to find the perfect Stylist, especially in the US. It takes time and effort. The best way right now is word of mouth. Ask everyone you know, with great hair... and when a Stylist's name comes up over and over, it's a good bet. This was the recomendation on another thread, by Hal, I believe.....

Hal, I e-mailed you the photos of my big ugly orange head. Did you burn out your retinas?

In the meantime, I called my stylist again (her kids must have wiped off my message) and she said she would like to do a few strand tests. She does not use Logix brand products, so she is going to call their hotline and ask a few questions. Her proposal at this time (which may change after she's talked to the Logix technicians) would be to do a foil highlighting using 2 different colors, one dark and one blonde. She does not use bleach because she's not crazy about its unpredictability. What do you guys think of her proposal?

In the meantime, she suggested that I try an ash blonde temperary rinse by Roux when I plan to go out and don't want to be seen with a carrot top.

Thoughts?

Julie,

I believe its time to find another stylist/colorist.

I would follow Sophies advice and ask around for a reccomendation. Even if you see someone in the grocery store that has great hair, go up to them and ask them where they go to get thier hair done.

The mere fact that she stated that "bleach was unpredictable" tells me she does not have a complete understanding of hair color. Having a license does by no means guarentee the person knows color. I used to teach in salon classes for Redken, I was an educator/Regional performing artist. More than 50% of the license stylist in the USA think they know color and really do not. They have a false sence of security about it.

Trust me. Be bold and ask a stranger that has great hair where to go.

Good Luck

I got them... so sorry I haven't got back with you. My after work time has been crazy!!!!!!!! I willstart by tell you though it may not be what you had hoped for it is not any where near as bad a what you think. In fact I know people that have paid lots of money to gewt hair that color. My first thought was how nice blonde highlights would look mixed in!
