I've seen many guides on how to bleach virgin un-dyed hair, but what about hair that has already been color-treated?
Here's my deal: My hair is color-treated (natural brown dyed to dark brown/auburn), but I take very good care of it, using deep conditioning packs and quality products. It appears to look very healthy. What I would like to know is, would it still be okay to bleach my hair safely (I know damage will be done with any bleaching, but can it be helped with serious conditioning)? What I'm basically considering is bleaching the current color out of my hair, and coloring it either a very light/champagne blonde or rich red. Because my hair is already so dark, even naturally, these colors would never show up well, so bleaching current color out first seems like a logical step to me.
Thanks, your help is much appreciated!

hi, if you're just going for a brighter red, then you'll only have to bleach it the once, but give your scalp 24 hours to recover before you put the other colour on, because bleach is quite harsh on your scalp. if you're going to go blonde, go to a salon. i've tried on loads of occaisions to bleach my colour treated hair blond, and i always end up with chemical burns on my scalp and chewing gum hair. on the other hand, i've done the same thing to a friend's hair, and although we had to bleach her hair twice to get past the orange stage, her hair turned out fine. you know your hair and what it can take, so if you feel brave, have a go, it's only hair when all's said and done.

hey i know that chewing gum hair. when i had my hair relaxed i also relaxed my blonde higlights. boy they turned out chewy. now i know the salon just bleach my hair instead of colouring it. oh well i am thinking about bleaching my hair. i hope it does not turn out chewy

I've done at home coloring and bleaching with pretty good results but not perfect. I've been to red and blonde before on my own as well as at the salon. Back then I was tight on money so I did the color myself since no hairdressers would give me what I wanted initially so I took it into my own hands lol. Going red is easier than going blond 'cause orange hair is all you need for red while yellow hair is what you need for blond colors. I advise you to do research first esp. if you never did it before and if you don't feel confident doing it yourself with lots of knowledge then go to salon.
