You are a prime candidate for highlighting at the salon! It's very hard to do highlights at home when you have dark hair. It almost always comes out orange. You have a couple of years invested in your long hair. Don't risk it by trying to highlight at home. If you don't have the funds now, save for it. It's so worth it.

I'm no professional but have some experience with at home coloring/dyeing, highlights on long hair is pretty difficult to do by yourself (due to back view and proper application). If I was doing highlights, I'd prefer to have them done at the salon rather than at home. Highlighting with foils has the best result than highlight cap (which is good for shorter hair) so it's not a job for amateurs. Unless you have any idea how to time and apply highlights by yourself using foils, you're asking for some trouble. If you just want some face framing highlights, then they can be reasonably be done by yourself opposed to full head or even half head highlighting. Hope that makes sense. Hairdressers, most of the time, do a superb job.
