I heard that it's usually about 3 months before you have to get them redone... is that about right? It's really expensive to get highlights done and I'm not sure if I should trust the Cost Cutters' $45 highlight job but I can't afford the $80-$90s at a good salon every month or two.

I've always been confused about the retouching process for highlights. Do the new highlights get put on just how they would if it was the first time? So eventually it gets to be the lighter color at the ends of the hair? OR somehow do the highlights get matched up to the old ones...

Thanks for any advice!!

**my natural color is actually very close to Trista Rehn's (the bachelorette) natural brown and I'd like to get my color similar to her blonde... I'm not sure if she does highlights or all over color (maybe you pros can tell).

When they retouch your highlights, they just put the stuff near the roots, so that the new growth has the same amount of highlighting as the old stuff. You'd think that it would turn out uneven looking that way, but actually it blends in nicely.

Your need for retouching depends on how extensive the highlights are. Highlights definitely don't have as severe a root line as all-over color, but even so, if you go from brown to blonde you will want to have the roots retouched every 6 weeks. If you have only a bit of highlights, not to change your overall color but to add a touch of sunniness, they can grow out for months and it doesn't look bad at all.

I just got my highlights retouched up today and it looked ok then i put my hair up in a ponytail and it looks very chunky. It looks ok if it's down and parted but up it's like it starts then stops then starts again. I'm kinda upset at this. What should I do?
