In the past I've always dyed my already black hair, blacker to go for that pale goth look. I always use number 10 (that is the darkest darkest black shade) haircolor in various brands.

But now I want to go brunette. Do I have to get a color that is lighter than the one I want, since the dye and the black will mix?

I used to dye my hair black years ago, and unless the dyes have changed significantly since then, there's not much you can do with it once it's black except let it grow out. I tried to cover over it or bleach it out, all sorts of things, but nothing worked. Talked to a stylist lady about it, and she said nothing would cover it, so I just had to deal with it until it grew out. It was a major pain :-( .

A friend of mine was in the same situations. There *are* some black dyes that do fade, but they're never consistent with eh "permanent" and "semi-permanent" labels.
Best thing to do is leave it fade a few months, then use colorfix and a bit of bleach. It should work fine, and not damage your hair too much.

If yo ever want to go blonde though, i think you may have to cut it short and grow it out again =(

My hair was accidentally dyed black and I didn't even do it myself! I went to a colorist! It was supposed to be a nice medium/dark brown but my hair ended up black. Anyway, I got my hair decolorized but hardly any of the color would come out. A hairdresser told me to get highlights to lighten it up. She tried to lighten my base with another color, but only my roots ended up taking to the dye, and turning them light brown. So it looked like I had 2 roots and caramel highlights only on top which looked awful on top of a black base. So then I got it dyed a dark auburn thinking it would blemd at least. It did for a little, but the auburn has faded and now it looks like I have red on top and black on the bottom. I recently got my hair chopped to chin length to cut out most of the black. The only thing I would advise i getting heavy highlights all over to cover up almost all of the black. But make sure you go to someone who knows what they're doing!

Last night, I stupidly thought that my black hair had faded enough to be covered. So I went out and got cheap Colorsilk dye in medium brown.

And now my roots are a different color. But you can't really notice.

I wished I would have known about this before I even dyed it black.

wait, are you serious?

Not even bleaching it would take it out?

I will never ever dye it black again. I really wanted to go brunette.

Oh well, maybe next year.

I'm no way an expert, but I've been dying my hair all sorts of colors for years now. I'm talking blue to pink to purple, black to blonde to green. I have successfully gotten rid of the black hair many times. Its probably not the best for my hair, but it always seems to work.

I always get everything from Sally beauty supplies. I normally use 2 bleach kits and pick up those little packets that keep your hair from turning reddish. (I have no clue what they are called though, I wasn't joking about me not being an expert :) ). I then bleach the hair, making sure I put it on the ends first and let it sit for a bit and then do the roots (this seems to make sure that you don't get white roots and dirty blonde ends....) Then I rinse out and condition it really well.... I actually use a home made conditioner.....Theres actually a couple I use, but unless the hair damamge is real bad I just use mayonnaise mixed with avocado. I massage it in, wrap it in plastic wrap and sleep for the night. The next day I wash it out and then dye it the new color. After the new color I also rinse it out with vinigar (returns the shine and also sets the semi-perm dye that i normal use) and depending on the color repeat the conditioning....

I had one friend who had a similiar situation. She wanted to go from black to blonde. We had to bleach her hair twice, but it worked... We waited two days in between the bleaching and did lots of conditioning... but it looked fine afterwards.

Anyways, I'm not recommending that you do it. I have no doubt that these people know much more than I do (after all I'm here looking for help), but just wanted to let you knwo that it can be done....

ColorFix (bleach-free) permanent hair colour remover -- available at Sally's. It's the most effective, gentlest way to get rid of unwanted permanent dye.

Bleaching does get black out, it's just not the best way of doing it... keep in mind accidental blacks will be easier to remove, as permanent black dyes tend to make your hair "blacker than black", as in shove too much pigment in.

I don't know, I dyed my hair black, and it's starting to fade a bit. I'm going to wait till it fades a bit more, trim it, and go all over blonde in a couple of years.

Oh, just to clarify, I had what was very nearly Accidental Black once trying to dye my hair purple (Stargazer dyes are VERY dark...) and it turned abnormally and strangely dark.

i have a friend who dyed her hair black, then a couple of weeks later went over in a dark reddish (burgendy, i think) color and had black hair with red highlights. after a while, the red faded and her lights became light brown, the black a medium-dark brown
