| Hello everyone! okay i have a question since you all sound like you have had much experience with hair color. I have dark brown hair with natural reddish goldish tones in it. I have it cut short now(above shoulders) and i wanted to add some highlights to get that summer beach effect. I dont have money for salon right now (my haircut took it all lol) so i went to Sallys and the lady recommended Blond Brilliance hair lightening kit and it comes with the powder, developer, cap and needle. Im willing to take a risk so i was wondering .. how long should i keep the creme on to avoid the brassy orange. She told me i basically just need to watch it myself and keep checkin where i want it to stop. Any advice .. i wanted to do it today so anything wiould help!!! THANKS SO MUCH!!! |

Hi, I do my own highlights with bleach. Dont' use the same brand, but don't know if it matters. (I got mine from Sally too). Here is my non-professional recommendation based on years of boo-boos. Waste bleach. That is, just because you mix a big bowl of bleach, do not necissarily feel tempted to use it. Just start with literally one small strand of hair and see how that goes. Time it, check it, fix it...whatever. Just figure out a formula that works on that one strand, then do a few more. You will always have more than you did when you started, but not too many. Too many of the wrong color = yuck + heartache + anxiety attacks + trauma.  You said you had brown hair, right? Well, brown hair (if you read on the boards) can be a color that goes all over the road color wise when you bleach...usually orange. So, you have to find a way to deal with that. If you're lucky, you'll get a color you like right off the bat. If you're typical, you'll be tinkering around a bit. Again, my advice...don't get too ambitious if this is your first crack at doing your own. The more you do and redo with bleach, the more you require your hair shaft to keep opening and closing....appparently it wears out after awhile (or becomes porous) and your hair ends up feeling like straw and losing that shiney gloss. Not cool. Hope that helps. Maybe some of the professionals can validate or correct anything I have said. |

Here's some advice: DON'T DO IT! Don't mess with your hair. My hair was a beautiful medium brown with red in it until last year when I decided to be a rebel and dye my hair. Worst thing I ever did and I regret it so much. If you really want to get it done, go to a salon or someone who knows what they're doing. Good luck! LinnY ------------- |

hey thanks for the replies so far.. actually i did the little strand test to see how my hair reacted with the bleach because ive heard that it could vary with everyone. I left it on for only about 20 minutes and the color was surprisingly nice. Its like a light golden brown not orangey brassy. So right now i have a little streak behind my ear and i guess ill go on and finish it. but im going to keep them very small and spread out to see how it looks. also.. how will the color change? will it get lighter? thanks! ------------- |

Yes sun exposure and daily use it will lighten slightly. You never stated how you were doing it while doing the whole head. Do remember when you did the strand test you watched one small section. When doing a whole head, if you are using foils, the first foil will have the color on longer than the last foil. You probably got the bleach off in time before you reached the brassy orange stages. Very tricky, once youve reached that orange stage it will proceed to go to the golden then white stages. since you are not a professional colorist i would strongly recommend DO NOT DO YOUR OWN HAIR! you may get lucky and get some great results but then again you may not be so lucky and get some brassy unwanted tones. ------------- |
