| Alright, my hair is about 20-23 inches long, and my roots are grown out about 3-4 inches(light brown) I want to have thin, face framing blonde highlights, then redye(refresh) my already dyed red hair. I always do my own color and it turns out good, but can anyone tell me what method/products would be best for the highlights? I dont want to dye my whole head red then try to do highlights making them orange, but to do the highlights first would be difficult when i then dye my hair. Oh yeah, my hair is pretty porous from dyeing, and i hear protein/color(?) fillers help to smooth it out before color, i have no idea about this, Can anyone help me out? Thank You. |

Coud you do the highlights first and then cover them with something so they won't be exposed to the other dye? ------------- More awesome than a manatee! |

You definitely want to do the highlights as a completely separate operation. Whether you do them before or after doesn't matter, what matters is that you have to section that part off and protect it from the dye when you're touching up your roots. This shouldn't be too hard to do. I've considered coloring the hair around my hairline light blonde rather than the medium auburn I use on the rest of my head, as my gray hairs there would allow me to lighten further without extra bleaching. You are touching up your roots aren't you? You're not applying dye to the whole head every time, are you? That's a very bad hair habit. There's a learning curve, but it's not nearly so bad for the hair to touch up roots as it is to recolor over and over again. -------------
