I want to get as many opinions as I can re: whether you think solid dark colors (reds, auburns, browns) are more flattering when left solid or with highlights. All comments and feedback are eagerly anticipated!

It really depends on the color and how natural the highlights are meant to look.
I hate hate hate those obvious stripes that a lot of girls are putting in their hair these days. Kinda like chunking, but not nearly so thick. They're either created by heavy application of a DIY highlighting wand or the salon stylist somehow thought it would look good on the poor girl's head.
Dark, shiny hair can be visually striking. However, some shades of brown can look flat without a break in the color. And if you're not a natural blonde, lowlights on blonde hair can soften it considerably.
So, um, I guess my answer is either or.

I think that darker shades of brown generally look better with highlights. Reds and auburns look great alone (no highlights), especially if the hair is shiny and in healthy condition.

The current trend is to have subtle caramel or chestnut highlights that are slim and subtle. They are placed around the face to frame it.
Some opt to get golden highlights that are chunky and near the temples.
The point is to avoid that zebra striped effect that scream anything but soft and natural.

Depends on the person and the style, base shade, and what kind of highlights are applied. For an outgoing person with a funky hairstyle, panels or chunks or something might look good. For a shy person with a basic bob, just dark allover might be fine. Of course, there's a lot of spectrum between the two extremes, but I'm sure you get the idea.
