Hi Korsakhovatt3 & Susan W! If you have a moment, I'm interested in your advice on this matter. Both of you seem to be rather knowledgeable on home hair coloring. I would really appreciate your advice and thoughts. Please see below:

I have naturally dark brown hair that is colored a medium brown w/ golden highlights throughout. I'm in a bit of a financial pinch, so, I was wondering if you know if it's possible to do my own root touch up at home, as opposed to going to the salon. My concern is that I'll get the dye on the highlights and totally mess the whole thing up. Does anyone know how I can touch up the roots, without harming the highlights? Also, would you recommend any particular brand to use? Any advice is much appreciated!

Thanks so much!

Hi Mena. I wish I had an answer for you. Unfortunately, everything I know I've learned by doing. My hair is heavily highlighted and my lowlights are dyed a light golden brown. My natural colour is auburn, so when my roots come in, I'll be in your situation (for the first time). I've been doing some research to try to figure out what will work best. If I come up with a good solution, I will share it with you.

I hope someone else has some good advice for you in the meantime.:-)

Well, that is risky. First you need to choose a color that isn't going to go a shade you don't want. Do you like a medium brown that is ashy, or reddish toned?

Also, if your highlighting is really close to your roots, I probably wouldn't dare to do it myself. Because your highlights are golden, they may pick up more of the base color of the dye you choose (which, if you choose an ashy tone, could make them look green, or if you choose a brown with more warmth could make the highlights go red if you get the dye on them). The advantage of choosing a warmer brown is that if the highlights go red, you can more easily remove red than green from golden hair (though it's still not a picnic). So, my point is, to avoid trouble, you don't want to get any of the dye on the highlights at all.

If your highlights are grown out a ways past your roots, you may be able to do it by getting one of those plastic dyeing bottles from Sally beauty supply, which has a long tip so you can just squirt the dye on your scalp by parting your hair with it every half inch. But even with that, you will have to use your fingers to spread the dye on all the undyed parts of the roots (which when I did it, it caused the dye to spread an inch from my scalp) and some of it may get on your highlights if they're too close to the roots.

Frankly, between the complicated issue of choosing the color, and the risk involved, I'd just wear hats until I could save up enough for a salon visit.

Good luck, and let us know if we can give any more help.

Thank you both for your help and insight. I think that my best bet is to simply find a less expensive salon than the one I currently use. Attempting this at home is a scary prospect indeed. My salon is exhorbitantly priced - $80 for a root touch up. I'm going to do some homework into looking for a less expensive salon. That's what you get from living in New York City.

Thanks again!
