Ah, a fellow Canadian. Pleased to meet you. I'm sorry, but I haven't used any of the products you mentioned. I used L'Oreal Creme Lights ($17.99). Here's a link to my explanation of how I did it. http://talk.hairboutique.com/forum/viewthread.asp?forum=AMB_AP293046898&id=2851 - http://talk.hairboutique.com/forum/viewthread.asp?forum=AMB_AP293046898&id=2851
If you decide to highlight at home, start by doing just a few highlights. If you want more, you can always go back and add more. I achieved my current colour with 4 separate applications of highlights.
After highlighting, I toned my hair with Born Blonde Winsome Wheat toner (not available in drug stores; you have to get it at a beauty supply store). Since then, I decided I wanted a more neutral (less warm) blonde, so I used Natural Instincts 06 Linen ($10.99). (It tends to make my hair look mauve when I first apply it, but it fades to a nice blonde after the first shampoo.) The Natural Instincts needs to be refreshed about every 4 or 5 weeks. I maintain my colour by using Silver Brights shampoo & conditioner ($4.49) (every 3rd shampoo). They're purple; they keep the blonde from getting brassy.
I plan to maintain my highlights by adding a few new ones every 6-8 weeks to soften the appearance of dark roots.
