I know it''s best to go to a professional , but it seems the last few times I''ve gotten hightlights,.. the pro messed up my hair.. Last time it turned red, the time before that it was too contrasty, with "stripes" and look very unnatural.. I hated it and I''ve always gone to very respectable salons and paid lots of money.

My hair is naturally dark brown. I like my hair a bit lighter & want to get my hair highlighted again (golden carmel highlights)..I''ve been patiently waiting for it to grow out and get healthier... it''s been 7 months since the last highlight disaster and I finally have about 4 inches of new growth and do NOT want to mess it up and have to wait again.

So what to do? Should I just do it myself and hope for the best.. can I get good results doing myself? or trust another professional which makes me just as nervous..

Any suggestions? I want to go with carmel highlights, but still have to deal with the red color that has been growing out.

I'd go to a professional. The reason being because you sound very particular about exactly what you want. That's fine, but when you first start to do your own hair, sometimes you mess up so bad you have to settle for something that just looks normal and isn't what you wanted at all!

Something you can do with the professionals (in addition to them being able to do it right the first time, and having to fix it if they mess it up) is bring pictures of exactly the colors you want. If you use the word caramel, they're likely to think of an orangy coppery brown, but you said you didn't want orange, so I'd avoid using that word. Photos show them exactly what you're thinking of.

I think either way you go, you're taking a risk. But there are things you can do to help minimize that.

A hairdresser theoretically would be the best choice, but only if you get a good hairdresser. To facilitate that, you might want to ask women with highlights you admire, who did their hair. You can bring a photo as suggested, ask your stylist to go through a hair sample book to make sure she knows what color you have in mind.

The other alternative is to do your own. On the plus side, you know what you want, so you will be able to try to place the highlights as you want them. But of course, the downside is that as an amateur, you don't have great expertise over how it will turn out. This could be a good route to go if you are adventurous.. the more often you do the highlights, the better you will get at it, so you could start gradually by doing subtle highlights that you feel comfortable doing, and as the hair starts growing again, gradually get a little more daring.. At the very least, if your hair gets screwed up, you know you will only have spent 10 bucks or so screwing it up, instead of 100. The downside is it may be a lot harder to pick the right haircolor to get the shade you want, so you may want to do a lot of research to make sure the hue is right.

Probably your safest bet is to try to find a hairstylist who understands what you want and can deliver. If you get a hairstylist who gets the picture, it's much less likely you will have to deal with undesired results. But if you have tried most of the hairstylists in town to no effect, or if you want the thrill of doing it yourself, trying it at home might give you the kind of control you like.
