The stylist will probably use foils on your hair. Strands of hair are selected, placed on foil and bleach (or a high-lift dye if your natural colour is dark blonde or lighter) is painted onto the hair. Then the foil is folded up and the stylist will move onto the next section of your hair. The number of foils used will depend on how much hair you have and the look you are trying to achieve. The stylist will let your hair process (sometimes for 60-90 minutes depending on the amount of lightening you need). Some stylists will get you to sit under a hair dryer for a while (heat can help the bleach do its job). Then the foils are removed and the bleach is washed out.
Alternately, your stylist may use a technique called Balayage where the bleach is painted directly onto strands of hair. http://www.balayage.com - http://www.balayage.com
Some stylists still use a cap. The cap is placed on your head and individual strands are pulled through holes in the cap and the bleach is placed on them. The hair is rinsed with the cap still on.
Good luck on your new highlights. I hope you get the look you're going for.
