Level 1 black level 2 very dark brown level3 dark brown level4 brown level 5 medium brown level6 light brown level7 dark blonde level8 medium blonde level 9 pale blonde level 10 very pale blonde There isn't a 5 blonde. Most of the time hair gets put against swatches to see what level the hair color is. Somtimes a hair color can be misdiagnosed bc natural hair color is somtimes different from the hair color companies. There are also tones involved: ash, neutral, golden, red. A person can be one of these or even a mix of these. ------------- |

level 1 is blackest of black and level 10 is platinum. so knowing this- common sense would tell you a level 5 is a medium of these two, which would be a brown...as you go up from 5 the lighter you get, as you go down, the darker you get...anything below 5 is pretty dark. ALWAYS look at the level number on the bottle as opposed to the hairswatch. a level 4 on a swatch doesnt look so dark, but after its all said and done--its pretty dark. so you have to be careful. and yes, summer was right--their are different undertones...they specify these on bottles usually by the first letter of the tone. Ashes usually make people look washed out or can turn green. ------------- Sara |

You know actually platinum is not really a level but a tone. Actual platinum blonde is a very cool silver blonde. The level 10 blondes are just very pale blonde but when the salons actually did the double process in the 60's they would bleach to pale yellow and use a toner, the most popular being platinum. Not many ppl know or understand about hair or hair colors. Infact most don't have alot of knowledge about levels, color, tones, differences in peroxide strengths, bleaches, toners. There is alot of erroneous information about hair and chemical processing, especially about lifting ability. I'm sorry when I said that hair comes in tones and sometimes a mixture, I meant natural hair color. Its true of both. Clairol colors run lighter than their swatches and Loreal run as dark or darker than their swatches. ------------- |
