My hair is WHITE around the face to the crown, then grey in the back. I am considering lo lights, but I do not want brown tones, but shades of charcoal. Is this possible? Or will eventually when it fades, will it be brown tones?

If you want to have dark charcoal color then you need to pick a color that is level 3 or down.
Clairol makes a couple of products that would give you what you want.
I would use permanent color over a demi because demi's tend to fade to an off toned result. Permanent color will fade but stay on tone.
I'm going to recommend Miss Clairol Gray Busters #82N + 20vol peroxide.
I would use a cap and pull it thru in the areas that you want, really see where your gray and then mark the cap where that is before you put it on, becvause if you put a dark color over hair that is already dark, then it will look black. Processing time is 25 minutes.
