I agree, Nicholle. The other Hairlocs thread needs to end. So let's start a new one!

Did you know when you run Hairlocs through spellcheck, it changes the word to "hairloss"? How appropriate.

Here is a photo of a typical Hairlocs strand that fell from my head:

http://members.aol.com/purgefile/hairlocsdamage1.jpg - http://members.aol.com/purgefile/hairlocsdamage1.jpg

Notice all the hair coming out of the top of the lock? You can see it curling down to the right. Does that look like naturally shedded hair? NO! It's broken clean off. See the slightly darker hairs on the right? That is my own natural hair that was pulled through the lock to attach the Hairlocs strand to. The Hairlocs clamp sheared it right off.

http://members.aol.com/purgefile/hairlocsdamage2.jpg - http://members.aol.com/purgefile/hairlocsdamage2.jpg

Here is the broken hair strand once the Hairlocs metal clamp has been opened. You can see how the clamp's outer layer shedded itself from the clamp. They do that and then the copper clamps rust and turn your hair green underneath.

Look at the thickness of my own natural hair that came out. Now MULTIPLY that by 250-300 for every Hairlocs strand and you can figure out why women are so passionately AGAINST Hairlocs.

http://members.aol.com/purgefile/hairlocsdamage3.jpg - http://members.aol.com/purgefile/hairlocsdamage3.jpg

Here is another strand taken out. You can see the top of the Hairlocs strand on the left has been completely chewed apart by the tightly clamped copper Hairlocs shell. It has also turned green from the shell. My own hair on the right was also covered in green.

Do these photos attest to Hairlocs claim that they're safe and non-damaging? I don't think so.

Hairlocs people -- when you come to this board and tell those of us who've suffered REAL damage that you want to sue for false claims, I say BRING IT ON!

Kimarie -- there are women here who have lost their own hair because of your installations. This is the place for them to speak up and share their experience. Your threats of suing them in an attempt to quiet them is more telling of your character than you can possibly realize.

I'll tell anyone here or elsewhere how the Hairlocs method ruined my own hair. If it stops one person from getting them, losing their hair and a ton of money with it -- it'll all be worth it.

just one more thing: amm, I know you've used microlinks and/or extendtubes before, too. did they cause any similar damage? Or is the copper bond somehow more apt to break down the hair down than other materials? is the metal safer, or is it in the acutal application? just curious.

Now that's craftmanship. I'm really impressed. You paid extra for the green gunk, right?

At least your hair looks totally hot now (I saw the photos on your other post). Did you get a refund for the rusty, broken handiwork in these photos? Not that it would give you your hair back, but at least it's something.

Hello Ladies. Many of you may not know me, but I am a frequent poster at other hair loss sites, such as keratin.com and heralopecia.com. I recently had a horrible experience with hairlocs and Kimarie, which is still continuing since I have not found anything yet to cover her work, which still remains on my head. It seems that there are quiet a few of us that have gone through similar experiences with her. I'm disgusted to learn that she is visiting all of these forums, in a desperate effort to defend herself. I would love to speak to any of you that are also outraged by you experience with her. Please let me know if you would be willing to speak to me privately through e-mail or by phone. There is strength in numbers, so I think that it is important for all of us to get together. I am already in communication with at least one of her former clients, that has had a similar experience to my own. I understand that you might be hesitant to contact me, because it's extremely difficult to know who you are dealing with through the interent, but please feel free to visit the sites that I mentioned, so that you can confirm my legitimacy. Please send me a private message if you are interested in communicating with me (off the boards, to protect our privacy). I look forward to hearing from you.

Oh and by the way...I have a little baggy full of my extensions that have fallen out that I could take pictures of too. Kimarie said that they fell out due to my natural shedding cycle, but I don't understand how every strand that onc particular hairloc was attached too fell out at the same time. Can someone explain this to me?

Nope. But you should take photos.

miamigirl, thanks for posting.

Sounds like your hair is getting sheared off by those thin copper locks. I know all too well what you're going through and I feel for you.

If you like the hair, please save it. If you choose to wear some other type of strand by strand extension, the hair can be salvaged. I am sure you paid a lot of money for it so hopefully you can reuse it later.

When the time comes that you'll be removing all the locks, here's some advice -- start conditioning your whole head like crazy every time you shower. And take out the locs with a small pair of regular pliers and DO NOT let anyone remove them with the Hairlocs tool. Gently squeeze open the shells from the outside until it releases the strand or is able to slide down your hair shaft. Using the Hairlocs tool will only cause more damage as that tool has prongs that go INSIDE the shell and pries it open. When it does that, it separates and rips your own hair strand on the inside.

Good luck!

AMM: Thanks for the advice. I started really paying attention to the ones that are coming out and they each have a white bulb at the end. I'm assuming that means that they are not coming out due to shedding (please correct me if I'm wrong).

As much as I would like to remove them, at this point I'm sort of stuck. I have extremely thin hair, especially on top. I don't really feel like I was a true candidate for hairlocs, despite what my stylist said, and cannot remove them at this time, because I'm not sure how badly my hair is damaged. I need to find an alternative first. I'm currently in the process of researching other options, but unfortunately in the meantime, the hairlocs are continuing to come out, taking my hair with them.

I, too, had many locs slip out, many of which looked like the photos you've provided. Thanks for posting these--I think it's a very helpful addition to the boards.

I'm going to take pictures of my hairlocs too. The only thing scarier then AMM's picture, would be a picture of the chunks of my hair that came out along with each hairloc.

Ok here is the deal-

All hair extensions are damaging there is no way around it. Some methods damage more than others. This is the reality of not waiting for your hair to grow or damaging your hair etc. So the solution is to get hair extensions. They make you look and feel good, you get noticed more, you feel sexier and more attractive- Thats why we spend thousands to have them done.

However like anything that seems to be a quick fix has draw backs.
Great Lengths, Cinderella, Icyhair, Microlinks, Glue, fusion, bonding, latex adhesive, micro linking, tree braiding, pinch weaves etc.

They all have thier down side. All hair extension methods will cause some degree of thinness when worn over long periods of time.

The fusion method can cause major thinning and should not be worn more than 3-4 applications Because the hair will show severe thinnes if it is kept worn over and over

Chemically processed hair should not have any type of fusion bonding or micro links because the hair is usually to week to support it.

Poeple with excessive oily hair or very dry hair should aviod the fusion method and micro links
Because your extensions will just slip out faster if oily or will break of because of the dryness.

The same goes for fine thin hair-

People who shed exsessive hair should also stay away from fusion & Microlinks because the bonds will be naturally shedded out fast or the excessive hair that is shed cause major tangles in the extensions and the hair will start to matt-

The weaving method can cause traction alopecia if not applied properly. Worn over long periods of time the weaving method will also cause breakage, and can be irritating to the scalp.

The latex method is another method wear sometimes the latex glue can pull the hair of the scalp when removing-

The list goes on.
I have done extensions for years and many clients and I tell them up front that these things coul;d happen and that they should be aware of these problems. I make them sign my disclaimer and they are free to choose with knowledge whether they want to proceed or not.

I also wear extensions and I myself have suffered some damage, but to me, I have natural yuky hair to bein with so the sacrafice of wearing hair extensions is a good trade off-

I would recommend talking with your stylist and make sure they are honest with you about the possibility of having damaged hair. If any stylist tells you there is no damage then run for the hills and do not waste your money, because they are lying.

Yes there are people who do not have any problems while wearing extensions, however your stylist should be up front with the risks.

Extensions are fun to wear but be aware there is some comlpcations
You will need to weigh the pros and cons with your decision and decide if hair extensions is worth it

Hope this helps outp-

try not to complain to much - remember you made the choice to have them put in. If the method you chose does not work there is always wearing your hair natural or investigating other methods available for attachment

By the way I just want you to know, I do not do extensions with the cylinders, I dont work for the comapny you all are compalining about- just so you know that my expirience with hair extensions is all the same

I will say that 75% of extension methods can and will cause a degree of damage to your natural hair

By the way one last hint to help you extension wearers
While wearing extensions amke sure that you take vitamins if you havent in the past. Calcium and Biotin are main ones. I have found most of clients who suffer from weak hair lack in vitamins
So when you put hair extensions on top of weak hair
well you get poor results, try taking a multi viatmin a few weeks before your application and during your wear.
This will help imrove the strength of your own hair and help get your hair get healthier.
Just understand you will not notice these effects for at least a month but it will improve your hair extension wearing time.

Thanks for the info Angel Hair. However, I do think that all of us have a right to complain, especially if we were misled and misinformed by the person that installed them. I'm glad that you work in an ethical manner and choose not to put your clients in the horrible position that some of us have been put in. Just out of curiosity what type of extensions would you recommend for someone that suffers from female pattern hair loss, has diffused thinning all over, and is especially thin on the top and crown area?

Thanks, Angelhair, for your response. It's helpful to get a stylist's perspective, and it sounds like you have made every attempt to inform your clients of both the risks and the rewards of various methods.

Based on my research and experiences, I would have to agree with most of what you've said: There are no 100% perfect extensions, and any extensions can be damaging, depending on the method, the application, and the hair of the client. Some methods, of course, are potentially more damaging than others.

Per the complaining issue, however, I think you're missing the point: The clients/former clients on this thread are complaining precisely because their stylists haven't told them about the risks and potential complications. True, we all decided to get extensions, but if we had known about the damage, the slipping, the green discoloration, and so forth, we wouldn't have chosen to proceed with this method. And any stylist who doesn't tell you about those defects up-front, or doesn't tell you that the method is completely unsuitable for your hair, just isn't being honest about their product.

It's true: If one method doesn't work out, there are other solutions. Many women who have posted on this thread have found alternate methods that we're really happy with. (And I think this proves that we're not fundamentally unhappy with all extensions; it's a particular method and/or stylist that we take issue with.)

And if clients suffer long-term damage or invest thousands into a system that doesn't last past a few weeks--if the product/service doesn't live up to the most basic expectations--then I, for one, think those clients have every right to request fixes or refunds and, if those options fail, complain and share their stories with others.

Again, thanks for sharing your perspective.

Jenifer i do have to agree with you on being informed on pros and cons. My stylist did inform me that the shells can leave a green mark onto to my hair which it does and it also does wash right out. She also has told me that there will be times that the locs will slip out- what she does is, if a client looses some the first two weeks~ she will apply them back in at no charge to the client, Its just a curtiousy thing. Her prices are very fair as well. I absolutley feel terrible that so many have had such problems with their hairlocs. I have done great with mine and so have many others i know. I am a bit intrigues though with the shrinkies thing too.

It doesn't look naturally "shedded" to me--more like "shRedded" and, of course, green. Tell me, Gia, why would AMM lie about this? Why would she post pictures of damage if it never really happened? What does she have to gain by making this up? I just can't understand why you're doubting her.

Funny, gia, but I've never "shedded" half the hair off my head before in 6 months time.

I also may be the first person in the history of the world who "sheds" her hair by it breaking in half.

Maybe Hairlocs would like to use my photos on their site to show "natural shedding"?

Please contact me and I'll give you permission to use my photos.

I am soooo sorry that had happened to you!!!! When I first started using hairLocs that happened to me! I was so upset!!!!!!! THe girl did the same thing to me. I found out that she was clamping them in to hard and was reckless with the tool!
I have been getting my hair done by Constance Walsh in Newport Beach. She has been doing them for 10 years and GUARENTEES HER WORK! She is very cool. If someone messes up using hairloc she gives a huge discount and fixes the hair. She re-did my hair correctly and deeply apologized for a mess that she did not even do. Call her she's cool. 949 646-9447

Wow, ladies. I think there's just so much lack of information on this site. I have many years experience with hair extensions, and as far as the shedding, you don't realize how much of your hair sheds because before you had extensions, it wasn't locked in with glue or hairlocs. The white bulbs really are shedding, and yes, many hairs of the tiny section may shed at once. With hairlocs, the strand slips when there aren't enough hairs to hold it. I also think there are many stylists who just aren't experienced enough. The pictures seem to me that they probably didn't take a big enough section of hair to install in the tube, and they clamped it too tight. I would also like to know why the coil is broken.

I think Kimarie has obviously burned too many people to be named so outright here, and well, that's her Karma to bear, but that does not make the system altogether bad.

Thanks, Visitor, but I think the lack of information is when a company/stylist charges thousands to apply a product and fails to tell the customer that it will destroy their hair or make it green. That's a lack of information. This site, on the other hand, is very informative.

I find it really insulting when stylists come on this site and claim that extensions damage isn't really damage all; it's just "natural shedding." Like I didn't know I had long hair to my bra strap when it was applied and then 75% of it was all gone in two months? That's our imagination. You've got to be kidding.

And let's face it, you're not "Just a Visitor"--you're just another hairlocs person trying to defend your product. The pictures don't lie, Visitor.

You know....that really burns my a$$..."lack of information on this site"? Excuse me but there is a vast amount of information on this site, many of us are NOT stylists here but have been doing extensions for years for ourselves and others and I think we have aquired a huge amount of information that we pass along to others. And I believe that we are alot more experienced and qualified in giving our findings and opinions on different methods or techniques than many so called qualified extension professionals who may go through a few hour training class and learn one technique and never learn any other methods so they have nothing to compare there experience to and then thy push that technique without telling the down sides of that technique... where us DIYers are always looking for a better way....so we SHARE the info. THE GOOD AND THE BAD.......

SORRRY.........I will quit ranting now.

I for one think this forum is great. I've learned alot just by reading the posts here. I think the people are helpful and full of knowledge. Sharing information is empowering!

I would trust a professional more if they were to tell me the ups and downs of a service rather than make it into something that will be the "cure-all" to our hair problems.

Honesty is always the best policy.

I think this site is awsome!! I have learned so much already! You guys are great. I love the honesty here!!!! People (hair extension professions) if your wrong admit it...if you screwed up someones hair...admit it and fix it for free!!!!!So simple yet you make it more difficult on yourselves by denying your mistakes.

Bye Bye
