Hi all.
I am interested in getting extensions, and was wondering if I would be able to use my own hair which I still have in a drawer.
I have phoned a salon over here, but they have said that it "doesn't work like that".
Apparantly they need the special bonds on the top etc.. But is there any way I can have my own hair altered so that it can be used?
Surely it would be much much cheaper, or does most of the cost just go on labour?
Sorry if I am asking dumb questions, but I was really looking forward to having long hair again. Please help!
Thanks.

I would say most professional salons use hair they supply. There may be some stylists out their that tip the hair as they go. Try calling around some more.
The problems I see with professional stylist not wanting to use customer supplied hair is because they aren't sure of the quality and then of course they can't charge as much.
The other alternative is to empower yourself and learn to do it yourself. There's a ton of info on this board that describes how to do Keratin Fusion, Microlinks, shrinkies, pinch braids, sew-ins etc.
The first time you do it yourself, it's a little intimidating but once you get the hang of it, you feel so empowered that you are no longer at the mercy of weave stylists.
Here are some links that you may want to look at.

Also do some searches on this board on how to make your own bonded tips and for the best weave experience make sure you have the best hair. There are a bunch of threads that discuss that also.
Good Luck

Thank you ever so much for the information. I will most certainly look into doing my own. I don't think I will use my own hair for that though, cos knowing me I will mess it up.
I'm excited now! Thanks!
