Hello everyone. This is my first entry in the message board. Yes, I am growing my hair long. It is currently just brushing my shoulders. What is bothering me is that my hairdresser that I have gone to for the past 2 years has had to change salons. Her rent was raised at her old salon and she couldnt afford the increase and had to move. I`m really not comfortable with the new salon she moved to. Although I have not been inside it yet, but know where its located and saw some of the products sold while looking through the window while the salon was closed. It`s located next door to a barber shop that i swear has a sign as large as a billboard. She is not a barber, her salon is just located next to one. I cant stand to see that barber shop sign, it freaks me out. Being a guy with long hair, you just want to stay away from anything barber shop, such as clippers, trimmers, razor cuts, or american crew products or any "Male Haircare". I love my hairdresser, she is wonderful,but that sign bothers me and the fact that the salon she moved to carries and sells american crew products just makes me nervous, although they sell what she has always used on me it still makes me nervous. I don`t want to leave her and I`m afraid to say anything because it might hurt her feelings. I just dont know what to do. She is the only hairdresser I have ever gone to who does not try to talk me into cutting my hair short or want to use clippers or trimmers on me, in fact she hides the ones she has in a drawer before i come in for my appointments just so i dont have to look at them. Which I really appreciate. Please give me some advice. I have an appiontment this saturday on the 12th of January. I dont want to leave her, but I`m afraid i might have to. ------------- Chip |

I would call her. Let her know that you need to talk to her when she has a moment when she is not hurried. If possible, schedule a time when she can call you back. I wouldn`t go in there, because it may make you even more uncomfy and make what you want to say come out wrong. I have had the same dealings with salons when I had long hair. They felt that I should cut my hair and I was pressured all the time and I am a female!! I know what you mean. IF you need to write down what you want to say on a sheet of paper.. that way you don`t get nervous and kick yourself later because you forgot to say something. trix ------------- Hair type: fine but thick; natural blonde with 15% grey |

Hi Chip, If it really bothers you that badly, how about paying her to come to your house? That way you wouldn`t have to look at the barbershop next door, and it sounds like she could use some extra money, as well! It might be a little awkward for her to come to your house alone, but if you`re developed a mutual trust over the years with her, I can`t imagine that it would be a big deal. Jennifer ------------- |

Thank you so much for your replies to my concerns. I`m glad that I have been sent some very good advice. I`m going to call her tommorow but first I`m going to follow trix`s advice and write down what i should say so I don`t ruin things with her. I dont want that to happen. I`m also going to try jennifer`s advice about either going to her home or her coming to mine. ------------- Chip |

Hi Chip, I agree with the other posts. If your stylist knows your fears she will probably be extra careful to make you feel OK with everything. Don`t worry about talking to her, I talk to lots of stylists every week and they really do want their clients to be honest with them because when a client leaves and they don`t know why they are upset that the client didn`t tell them what was wrong. I went to see her today and all went very well. We talked about how uncomfortable i was with seeing or hearing the sounds of clippers. She totally understood, and told me she wouldn`t want anyone to use them on her either. The way I got around the barbershop and their large sign which is located next door to her salon (she is NOT a barber by the way) was ,I parked on the opposite side of the parking lot and kept my head down so i wouldnt have to look at it. It worked out for me. She said she was sorry about sign of the man next door. I know its not her fault. I feel bad about it being such a big deal to me, but I have a genuine fear of clippers, trimmers, american crew products, and barbershops. I had a bad experience once where a lady I was going to see for my hair decided she wanted to totally cut my hair off. It happend so fast to start with that I froze and couldnt move. I thought she was working at a beauty salon because that is how they were listed in the phone book, but she actually was a barber. So ever since that time i have this fear inside of me. My hairdresser that i see now is a beautician, i know cause she showed me her cosmetology license. She is the best and i love her alot. I want to thank everyone for their advice.
