I thought it might be helpful to start a thread discussing the differences between Shrinkies from Doc Locks and dual-wall heat shrink tubing. What's the difference between the two? What's working for people and what isn't?

I'd post pictures of the Dr. Locks shrinkies and the dual wall tubing I have but I don't think the photos would be able to show that much difference.
Some have already located the 1/8" dual wall on cableorganizer.com. 1/8" is the exact same diameter as the shrinkie so the size is perfect. Unfortunately, they do not respond the same way.
The best way I can describe the Dr. Locks shrinkie is that it is very clear and is flexible like a drinking straw. If you press it between your fingers, it is very soft and giving. The tubing from cableorganizer.com is not. It's what I would call rigid or semi-rigid.
When searching for a good alternative, you'll want 1/8", ensure the tubing is clear (not opaque), that it is adhesive line and that it is soft and pliable.
I'll continue to experiment and will pass along any findings.

Im glad you said what the difference was Amm. The stuff I got from my local supply is very flexible. The trouble Im having is with it shrinking. If I clamp it between the straightening iron it just flattens out and dosnt shrink at all, I have to get the heat source at the very ends for it to shrink and thats next to impossible with an iron. I may have to break down and spend the $100 on a shrinkie iron.

Are shrinkies the tubes that hold the extensions? I'm new to eurolocs and hairlocs, can anyone please tell me the difference? There's so many options for extensions, I'm starting to get confused! I've had a sew in & a glue in before, and now I'm looking for a more long term fix. Any info is great, thanks so much! Bridget

Welcome, Bridget!
I've moved your question to a separate thread because it will take some space to answer those questions and will be a good overview for beginners. The thread is called "Bridget, Your Question is Here."

Emma,
Man, I tried a straightening iron once and it was a pain in the butt.
What's the shrink ratio on your tubing? It should say on the package like 2:1 or 3:1 - something in that format.
That heat wand makes a world of difference but I hate the price, too. I mean, c'mon, $100?!! That's outrageous. Still, if you've tried the heat shrink tubing to some degree and know you want to switch over, it's a good investment. I don't think I could do my whole head without a wand that heats like this and has this shape.

I have the exact same brand they sell on dr locks. My friend bought it and then decided she didn't want it so I bought it off her. Works splendidly.

Excellent--that's exactly what I wanted to hear! I just placed my order with Doc's and then thought, "I should really check first...." I put in a few with a flatiron, but I have a feeling that would be quite unweildy for a whole head. :)

My tubing didnt come in a package, it was bulk, just one long 4 foot section so I dont know what the shrink ratio is. I applied heat to a piece and it shrunk down to about half its size I would say. I can get it to shrink just find by itself but when I put it in my hair I cant get it to shrink at all. I tried a curling iron today and burnt the crap out of my head ...lol...oh well tomorrow is another day.

P.S: I applied for a work study at the college today, if I get it I will have extra money to buy necessary tools and good hair, keep your fingers crossed for meeeeeee.

I'd like to chime in again here with my frustration. I live in England and use shrinkies but can't get anything like the wand from Dr Locks over here so I've bought a Nicky Clarke Slim Straightener its only 12mm wide, its perfect and works well but I do wish England would catch up, but then again do I really want England to catch up, because all the salons are still doing fusion around here except for little old me who is the only person I know of that's doing shrinkies and they are making me a killing, everybody loves them, so no England you keep on being slow he he.

Amanda, that's funny; I'm glad you're enjoying your shrinkies.
FYI: In the U.S., the overwhelming majority of salons do fusion only, too (for outrageous prices, I'll add). There are very few professionals here doing shrinkies (or Shrink Links), much less any other methods. I think DIYers are more ahead of the curve on this one (on both sides of the Atlantic). I'm sure if you wanted to visit the U.S., you'd have a great demand for them here, too!
