My shrinkies kit and LG came in yesterday so I decided to pretip the bohyme hair I had from a previous extension job. Anyway, I let it dry overnight and just now, experimented with applying the shrinkies to a good size strand of my hair plus the pre-tipped hair I made. It works great and looks really good. The only problem is, now I can seem to get it out. I tried applying the heat clamp to soften the shrinkie and it made it even tighter. What am I doing wrong? It don't seem to wanna come out. I read lots of discussions about fall outs but not many about getting them off. I don't think I'll really have any problems with fall outs since it seems to grip very firmly. My biggest fear is that I'll have a whole head of 200+ strands and it'll take me days to get each one of them out. Seriously, what am I doing wrong?

Hmm... I haven't heard of this before. Where's AMM? Yikes!!! Are you pulling on the strand while you're reheating it? I assume you did, but if not, try it. Failing that, my thinking is that perhaps they're still shrinking when you're removing them because they haven't been in long enough. Did you roll the shrinkies between your fingers when you applied them. Man, I wish I could be of more help with this one. I can't really think of what it could be. I'm sure someone will respond soon, but in the meantime, have you tried just saturating the shrinkie with oil to loosen it a bit? (Just be careful, because I don't think you'd want to combine the oil with the heat.) Sherrie, AMM, Kristin, Emma, MetalGirl....anybody? yiiiikes...I havent heard this either. Maybe try turning your heat up on the fusion wand. And like Jenny said, be sure while your applying the heat to the shrinkie you are gently pulling down to slide the shrinkie down the hair. I havent worn the shrinkies yet but in my experiment with them I also tried out the removal. And they always seemed to at least warp out of shape enough to slide down the hair. i havn't tried shrinkies either but i have been doing a lot of research. i notice that the removal is 95% alcohal. i wonder if using 99% makes a big difference.thats what we use to take of prosthetics from the skin in film. it is also what GL uses as their removal.let me know if you try it and what ended up working.this is very interesting. you can get 99% at any professional cosmetic store like naimes or friends or cinema secrets. |

thanks gals! I appreciate the wealth of knowledge on this board. I tried the veggie oil...that didn't work..just left my hair really oily and yucky. Then I tried the pure acetone and that didn't get it off either....so i ended up using a fine pair of scissors to cut the shrinkie tube, then used the acetone and voila..it finally came out.  I guess it's all worth it to have beautiful hair! ------------- |

OCGal... I think I would just try experimenting a little with your heat settings. But try the experiments on a few strands of extension hair first, not on your head! Try adjusting your heat. Maybe the shrinkie wasnt heated enough, because it should have been at its smallest size at application. Maybe it was just shrinking down the rest of the way. Try holding your wand on the shrinkie longer to get it to warp to remove it. Id play around a little with a few shrinkies and extension strands. acetone is 95% alcohol. thats why i was wondering if 99% would be easier. i can hardly wait to get the kit ! |

oly how would acetone or alcohol remove the shrinkie? My understanding is that you need to reheat the shrinkie to take it out of its tightly shrunken state. Then the acetone or veggie oil is used to remove any glue residue thats left from the pretipped strand. Please correct me if I am wrong! Oh goodness. Just got in to read this, sorry for the delay. Are you using Dr Locks shrinkies? If so, make sure your double-sided heat clamp is right around the shrinkie, hold it down for about 5-10 seconds and gently glide the shrinkie down the strand. It will come off. All of it will come off, I promise you. Just be sure to give it a moment to heat up and be sure to pull it off the hair strand with the heat clamp still around it. You'll have to use the clamp at least a portion of the way down. The shrinkie will not open. It becomes misshapen and then it comes off. sherrie you are not sleepy!!! i said earlier that i have never used shrinkie,i have been reading on them. the removal method i read said to use acetone or anything 95% or higher alcohol. i am very familiar with GL and i know that 99% is what i use to remove the bond with. i was curious to see if it worked with shrinkies. this thread has been so interesting,i am learning quite a bit. amm-i wrote down the removal tech . and will try it when i get my kit. ocgal-please let us know if you tried another method other than the scissors.that seems a little scary to me. |

Oly: The primary way to remove the shrinkies is to reheat the bonds and gently pull the strand out. The acetone (alcohol) and veggie oil are mainly to remove the glue residue afterward--not to remove the shrinkie or the strand. Here are the directions from Doc Locks: "Removal is easy. Using the heat clamp, reheat the bond. Pull the extension hair gently until it slides out of the shrinkie bond. Slide shrinkie off of the natural hair. Use acetone fusion remover and clamp to remove all remaining glue residue from the shrinkie ring....." That said, it obviously did not work in OCGal's case, which leads me to believe that either: A) The bonds weren't shrunken down enough in the first place, or B) the heat settings on the heat clamp are too low or the clamp wasn't applied for long enough. I assume it is a double-sided wand and the shrinkies from Docs. OCgal: I hope you didn't have to cut your own hair when you cut the shrinkie tube. Hi gals! Yup, I tried a couple more strands, only this time, I used it on my wig. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong really because I turned up the heat an extra couple of notches, held the doc locs wand on it for a good 10 seconds (heard it sizzle) while using my fingers to pull on the strand. It still didn't work. I guess I'm stuck using a very tiny pair of scissors to cut the shrinkie and then rubbing the acetone to get it out. :( ------------- |

OCGal I just went and done some experimenting with shrinkies and some spare strands. I used my ceramic flatiron cause my fusion wand is single sided and doesnt work well with shrinkies. I noticed it takes a little getting used to figuring out how long to clamp it down sometimes the shrinkie didnt shrink all the way the first time. Thats just a matter of me getting the hang of it! But.... on to the removal. When I clamped down on the shrinkie and applied pressure while pulling down on the shrinkie it slides right down the hair. When I crank the heat up to high the shrinkie actually sometimes rolls up into a little ball and falls right off or you can just pick it right off. I bought a cheap little 1 inch wide Conair ceramic straightening iron with 25 heat settings just for temp. purposes until I buy a new dual sided wand. I got it at walmart for 14.99 Also I used my "nailhair" keratin bonded preglued hair I just melted the tip and rolled it into a stick tip, it worked perfect and also held its shape and stayed together when removed.
