This is about 3 1/2 to 4 bags total of PlastikHaar in Satin Blonde, Platinum Blonde, and Weiss, mixed with Dome Light Blonde and Creamy White (I think that's the name).

They're pinchbraids, done by Issac at Cyberparlor, who mixed all the colors like a madman and did my whole head in three hours. I'd say the braids go up to about 1 1/2 inches from my center partline. (I don't usually wear a side part or barrettes, actually, but the before-and-after photo on Kristin's site inspired me.)
I probably should've brushed the back a bit more before I took these; I haven't had hair this long ever, I don't think!

Hopefully these photos work! :)

Must also bleach dark roots on crown of head, apparently...
Thanks, Sher! We had a lot of fun this afternoon, actually. I'm planning to post more after I wash it, etc., so people can see the progression.
By the way--in case anyone's wondering--we did not braid all the way to the top; it goes to about 1 1/2 inch from the centerpart and the crown, and I don't have any in the front at all. I have a lot of damage I'm trying to grow out, so we generally leave those areas free to grow (although they're growing at a snail's pace, because--as you can see--I'm crazy with the bleach these days). :)

Bellissima! That looks so awesome (somebody slap me, I'm starting to talk, er type, like my boyfriend).
I can tell the front is your real hair because it doesn't shine like the synth. It may not show up so much in real life, though. Or a little dab of shiny stuff on your real hair would fix it up.
Your (fake) hair is sooooo pretty. I wish my hair would do the sexy wavy thing. (I'm not sure if it holds a curl anymore after chemically straightening it this week...I gotta test that.)
Excuse the envious drool. =)

Thanks for the compliments, everyone. I really like the hair so far. I don't know if I'll be able to deal with this length indefinitely, but it's fun for now, and if I have to cut it a bit, that's no big deal.
How did Issac blend the colors? Good question.... He separated the hair two handfuls at a time and started shuffling it like a deck of cards. I was like, what the****? There's no way I could do it myself or explain it to anyone else--LOL! He acutally used a hackle to brush the hair a bit, but he said with the hair being that long, it was just easier to blend it with the "shuffling technique" (my name for it).
Syren: Yeah, it's quite Gwen in color. I've always loved white blonde, but it really takes a toll on your hair. I have A LOT of damage, much of it caused by previous forms of extensions I've used, but the trouble on the top and crown of my head is not from extensions. It's a combination of crappy genes and overlapping bleach, and I've also had some thinning caused by stress or some sort of vitamin deficiency. That's my theory, anyway. Before I ever started with extensions, I had very long hair in the back, from the ears down, but the hair on top of my head and at the crown was quite damaged. I colored it and treated it all the same, but that's the way it always went for me.
Leia: I'm definitely gonna try to shine up my real hair a bit to match--at least use a lot of product--and hopefully the synth shine will tone down after a few washes. The shine is pretty evident in some lights, but not so much in others.... My real hair is pin-straight, by the way, as you can probably tell from the photos.

Well, especially since your hair is so nice (and you want it to stay that way), I think pinchbraids would be a good option for you. Also, since your hair is so long and full anyway, they'll blend in with your hair no problem.
As far as the texture, I'm planning to post follow-up pics so you can see how the texture turns out after a few washes. :)

Oh, one other tidbit about pinchbraids and synth that I learned today: With human hair, the braids tend to expand over time a bit. When they're first put in, they're supertight, but they loosen up a bit and become bigger. According to Isaac, the synth doesn't expand in the same way, so the braids stay smaller, which, of course, would be a plus. :)

Katherine, I agree if you just want some streaks, some pinchbraided synth would be the easiest and safest for your hair. (Bleach is eeeeevil, and I'm trying really hard to quit, but it's difficult. I think I have a hair addiction.)

No problem, Kristin. Just BM me your address (I don't think I still have it), and I'll send you a sample of each--the Dome and the PH.
They've only been in since this afternoon, and I'm expecting that the wave will drop considerably in the next few weeks. So we'll see.
The hair was $13 a bag for the PH and $28 (I think) for the Dome. Then, there's shipping and everything, but I think the total for the hair that was actually installed (cause I ordered a bunch we didn't use) came to less than $100 (this would've been less, though, if I had done a full head of only PH, which probably would've totaled about $65 or $70). The application was $350, which is quite reasonable, imo, especially for New York.

Better Late than Never . . .wow you gals are hard to keep up with!!!
Went out to a movie last night (speaking of Gwen S. -- saw the aviator -- Jenny's MUCH hotter), slept a bit late, got on line, and WHOA!!!
I am LYING FLAT ON THE FLOOR IN DISBELIEF THAT ISAAC CHARGED ONLY $350 for the INSTALL. . .OK, that's it, I'm coming to New York.
I'm most curious about the blending in the front. Jenny you talk about the problem areas of your hair -- I noticed you had bangs in your other photo, and you appear bang-less in the photo now, or is that why you have the clip in??
IMHO, the hands down, *MOST* difficult part of wearing/styling hair extensions is the blending part in the front. There are a gazillion extensionists out there who can do great work but essentially the client looks the same right around the face area -- and it's so common to get that "bangs with long hair" look.
I am really curious to see the front a bit better Jenny, and to see how you work with it (that's the problem with the long long hair in the back too--did you ever notice how Paris Hilton often has those 2 clips in the sides of her hair, just above her ears, obviously to try to help the blending).
OK, enough babbling.
THANKS ALL --
Fina

Thanks everyone--you girls are so sweet. Kalika, you cut me up! Thanks for all of your inspirational photos--I was hellbent on getting the hair after I saw how great it looked on you.
Fina: That thumbnail in the previous pic was not me--it was an old picture of Debby Harry. I've never had bangs, so the hair in the front and top are basically the way they've always been. I'll post another pic of my hair with no barrette in a few days. It's the biggest challenge I face in terms of styling--camoflaging all of the damage and thinness I have on top. If the braids go up too high, they're visible (especially on me, because the hair's so thin and so white), but if they're not high enough, I don't get enough fullness. I think Isaac has hit on a happy medium.
Teasing actually works OK, but I'm trying not to do that, since it just seems to damage the hair more. I also have a wacky cowlick in the crown (you can see it in my first photo), so the hair always wants to separate at that point. Grrr.....
Seriously, though, my real hair is a disaster! I had a few terrible extensions experiences (before the pinchbraids and Isaac), and I'm still growing it out from that. And then, of course, there's the bleach, which certainly doesn't help, as well as the fact that I just wasn't born with good hair. I've also gone throgh a few periods of shedding/hairloss (perhaps stress or nutrition-related?), so I've got lots of little baby hairs growing all over the place. Fortunately for me, though, I don't have a widening part or bald spots (if I did, I really don't think extensions would work at all).
Isaac actually took all the braids out at once this time (usually he replaces one with another), so I saw my hair for the first time in almost a year. It's actually growing back now, but it's going to be a slow, painful process, I'm sure. I really should've taken a before photo--you'd be amazed by how little hair I actually have.... :)
P.S.--Yeah, the prices are quite reasonable. It's obviously more expensive if he gets the hair for you (especially if it's human), and I really just get the ends trimmed; he sort of layered the bottom a bit as he installed them, then just razored the ends a bit. I'm sure it'd be more expensive, however, if there's more extensive cutting or coloring involved. Also, it's a completely dry application (as many extensions installs are), so there's no washing or anything like that, which cuts down on the time considerably. :)

Jenny - wow girl! your hair looks so good! I'm so excited for you!

Thanks Bridget.
I had some shrinkies in before, and I do think they're a good method (especially for DIY). But I don't think I shrunk them down quite enough or something. I definitely need to experiment more.
Ideally, I would prefer not to have any glue in my hair at all, just because my hair is so, so porous and hard to deal with. But perhaps next time, I'll try a topmost row of shrinkies or even extendtubes. I do think they would be easier to conceal around the part than braids and would possibly enable us to go a row higher. :)

kimbearly, a pinchbraid is a small braid used to attach the hair. it is almost like this http://community.webshots.com/photo/100809390/103954149cijQkl - http://community.webshots.com/photo/100809390/103954149cijQkl
but not wrapped. string is incorporated in the braid and then tied off at the end to keep the braid from slipping. here is a HOW TO http://www.hairalchemy.com/tutorial/index.html - http://www.hairalchemy.com/tutorial/index.html

OK, I did some checking around locally. I am going to start looking at the local ethnic salons for some help with hair installation. . .I've surfed around a bit and found some ladies who specialize in "braiding" and I notice that the also say they do "strand by strand" and "fusion" extensions.
I've had horrible experiences in the past being a caucasian in the braiding world, but I'm gonna look around and see what I can find out. . .
I"ll keep you posted. . .as always. . .

Hey Mer,
My real hair is extremely thin, fine, straight, and fragile (think Tom Petty). I bleach it (obviously), which causes some damage, but that's actually a new thing. For years, I only used peroxide and got a very light color from that, but not quite this white-ish, and it was still damaging (some of this is due to unintentional overlapping when I did my roots).
My real color is a light brown/dirty blonde (very ashy, not gold); I haven't really seen it for years, though. Most hairstylists seem to think it's about a Level 6 or 7, and I can achieve a level 10 quite easily with a home peroxide dye, like Loreal Preference, probably because it's so thin. On the downside, even before I dyed it, it was never very strong or healthy-looking.
A few years ago, my hair was fairly long from the ears down, but even then, I could only wear those baby barrettes. The entire head of hair, in ponytail diameter, was like the size of a dime.

Fina,
If you're planning on doing the same process, just make sure it's the "string" method, also known as Hairpolice method. Sometimes the word "pinchbraids" is used to describe a few processes other than what we're talking about here.
Actually, Fina, where are you located? There might be a Hairpolice affiliate in your area (they're listed here: http://hairpolice.com/affiliates.shtml - http://hairpolice.com/affiliates.shtml ).
:)
Edit to say: I just saw that you're in Dallas. Perhaps if you were willing to drive down to Austin, there are two HP affiliates there. I have no knowledge of their work of course, but it may be worth a try:
Michelle Coleman Micky Kibbe & Penny Boone

Hey Jennie, do you mind telling me how many rows of braids you have? Also I really am interested in how long it took Isaac to blend the hair. I find that part really hard to be honest. That's something i think it really takes some time to master. After reading one of Sherrie's posts I'm wondering if i could make it a little easier on myself with a maul or something. part of it is that the synthetic hair I've gotten from Hisandhers tangles so easily it's a joke. THanks, you are a superstar.

Thanks, Amanda. I'm loving it too!
Save~A~Stray: I wish I could say which is better quality-wise, but I really can't. They feel quite similar, and as you can see, when you mix the two together, it's virtually impossible to tell which is which. The Dome light blonde was quite shiny, but so were the PlastikHaar Satin and Platinum; both companies' white shades were much more matte than their light blondes.
I'll definitely let you know if I notice any differences going forward. But at this point, just based on price, selection and customer service, I'd have to recommend Plastikhaar; PH is $13 a bag, whereas Dome is $28.29 (and the Dome shipping is pricey, too). Also, the PH comes superlong, so if you want shorter lengths or a lot of layering, you could possibly cut the PH and make two strands for the price of one (if that makes any sense...).
That said, I'm glad I ordered the Dome too because they have a very creamy white-blonde color that I'm not sure if PH has, which was added to the mix.

Scotchy: How many rows is a really good question. My best guess is 7, plus some smaller, mini rows on the sides and closer to the crown. My real hair is superthin and damaged in parts, so the extensions need to be placed quite strategically. So while they do follow a basic row formation, they sort of divert from that pattern somewhat, too.
Along these lines, the braids get a lot smaller as he works up the head. It took Isaac 3 hours to do my whole head, and he sort of blended the hair in batches as he went. He's been doing this for a long time, so he was just shuffling the hair between his hands like it was nothing. I wish it could explain how to do it, but I imagine it's just a matter of practice, really.

Thanks again, everyone. The hair is holding up well; it looks exactly the same now as it does in the pictures. Of course, I haven't washed it yet--maybe tomorrow. :)

One thing, though: I know a lot of people are interested in the differences between Dome and PH. At this point, the waves really all look the same in my hair, but I was just going through the bags I have of them, and I would say that, upon arrival, the Dome Classic is slightly wavier than the PH 50mm. The difference is pretty subtle, though. I imagine the Dome Wavy is comparable to the PH 28mm in texture, but I haven't seen either one yet. :)

Jenny,
The "shuffling" technique you described is probably the same one I saw on a video (Doctored Locs). The hair is held by the middle, halved and pulled apart, them put back together slightly off-set by 1-2 inches. The hair is brushed occasionally to keep everything neat. (Might not be so good for curly hair. Pick would probably work better.) This is done until the hair is blended to your satisfaction.
Note: I used this techniques when mixing my daughter's hair for Valentine's Day. Hot Red mixed with Neon Pink. Pinch braids a little more than 3/4 down with loose ends. The ends extend 6" past her own hair. She has natural blonde hair to her waist, so the effect is stunning to say the least.

How does the PH feel to the touch? Does it feel real? How does it feel when it's wet and can it be blowdried?
I once had a stylist install the Dome method in my hair, and they started slipping out immediately the next day. I also hated the Barbie Doll feel of the hair. I had this done about 12 years ago, so maybe the hair is made to feel more real these days.

metal I got me some hair at sally's yesterday, wanted to practice tipping, and just play around with hair, since I am too impatient to wait for the PH. I can't believe how awesome it feels, my husband was shocked too. Sassy brand, that Microfiber kind (?) not a clue how long it will last, but I didn't care since I just wanted to play. Not too shiny, soft, and beautiful.

woot! goodie! i was shocked, it was so nice and smooth. My experience with falls and pieces haven't given me this nice. Are you sure this isn't like a high dollar sassy brand? it is the monofiber that you can curl and was 15 for the batch??
Well. like I wasn't excited enough about getting the PH 3 weeks is too damn long. My dumb ass saw 2-5 days for shipping and forgot duh, it is in switzerland, einstein...
I was thinking of making this hair into clips and using it with a hat. Hate to waste it. And my hats look stupid with short hair.

Hey MetalGirl,
The Dome and the PH feel really nice to me, but they do feel different than human hair; I don't think there's a way around that. When it's wet, it feels like straw. actually, but the drying process is so much easier than with human, imo. I'll be posting an update with new pics tonight. :)
