OK, girls....

This morning I washed the PlastikHaar/Dome combo for the first time in warm (not hot) water. I shampooed and conditioned rather quickly, and left it to air-dry for about a half hour. Then, I blow-dried the top (my real hair) for about 1/2 hour and blow-dried the synth with the cool-shot button a little (I did not attempt to straighten or curl it--I just detangled with my fingers and kept the dryer moving). Afterwards, I sprayed some Dome Care spray on the synth, some shine spray and hairspray on the top, and went to work.

The hair has definitely straightened out. It's not pin-straight by any means, but the wave has loosened considerably, and it's getting a bit "piecey." On the plus side, the hair dried superquickly (much faster than human) and remained pretty tangle-free. Tonight I will sleep with it in a braid, to see if that makes it a bit wavier, but I'm thinking I'll need to steam it or curl it with boiling water to restore the wave.

Mer and Kalika: Let me know if these photos look similar to the progression of the hair after you washed it. :)

Here are the befores again and the afters (after three days and one wash):

I think it still looks pretty damn good..and at least we now know that the dome and the ph both lose a similiar amount of wave *at least after its first wash*

you know i emailed sara the other day about how the hair was losing its wave and she was suprised in her reply and said that her wave usually lasts months....soooo dunno? maybe just gotta keep the water colder than wed like eeek!

Yeah, maybe cold water would help. Again, the water I used wasn't even close to hot, but maybe even the warm water is enough to straighten it out. I do think Kalika said her wave dropped as well; I'm not sure about Mer.

It's true: The Dome and the PH are performing exactly the same, as far as I can tell. :)

I will have tim take a pic LOL It's prolly similar to yours and I don't even realize it!

Jenny RR..." I'm thinking I'll need to steam it or curl it with boiling water to restore the wave"
I've just stared in on the synthetic world. What exactly do you mean by that? How much heat will it withstand...hotrollers & benders OK?
BTW... I am soooo jealous. Your pics are so hot. I love blondes and wish I could be one. It looks like a** on me!
But enough about me... back to your lucious mane!

Good questions, Gina. I'm still a little vague on it myself, but apparently steaming the hair restores it to its original smooth, silky (as opposed to piecey, or stringy) state. Blow-drying the hair straight (very carefully, will achieve a similar result. As I understand it, velvet-covered hot rollers or steam rollers will add curl, as will braiding the hair or setting it in rollers and dipping it in very hot water. You cannot, however, blast a hot blow-dryer at it on full blast (I don't think), and curling irons and flatirons will singe the hair. Once it's singed, that section has to be cut off.

I'm sure others who have more experience with synth will chime in, but this is my understanding based on what I've read. :)

UPDATE: Slept with the hair coiled up in a scrungi last night, I just removed it, and it looks wavier--not as wavy as when they were first installed, but wavier than last night (when I took those photos). I think if I had sprayed some warm water on the hair and coiled it up into several scrungis or braided it, it'd probably be wavier. :)

Jenny~Is the steamer that Issac uses on synth hair an industrial type or would it be pretty affordable?

Posted By: Jenny_RR
Date Posted: February 16 2005 at 6:33am
I'm not sure what Isaac uses, because my hair wasn't steamed when he installed it, but he did mention that I could buy a steamer for pretty cheap. Then, I totally forgot to ask him what to look for and where to get it, lol. I'll need to email him about that. :)

Thanks Jenny, I would really like to get one if I am going to buy some synth hair. I'll want to play around with it and test it out. I figured it would save a lot of time.

Jenny - my hair was straighter for a few reasons...

A. I waited a little over a week to wash it
B. I used a regular brush on it a lot
C. I washed it in hot water
D. I blowdried it with warm air

I mostly did it cause I didnt care if I retained the wave, its not hard ot get it back :)

Thanks, Kalika. That's good to know.

My hair was actually a bit frizzy on the ends this morning so I sprayed some of the Dome Care product on it and the frizz disappeared. I imagine braid and wig sprays do the same thing?

SAS: I'm emailing Isaac now. Will keep you posted about the steamer. :)

JENNYY

My blonde has more layers in it than yours does. So my shorter layers "bounce more" bc they are lighter (weight) so I think they are 'holding' curl (in my head)

Does that make any sense?

Mo Mo hair. That was classic.

AMM updated last night on her thread about finding the synth hair holy grail. Recall that she had said that Wa Wa *could* be curled using a curling iron. She says it's holding up well, although she only has about 6 strands in.

I'm waiting for mine to get here and am going to a lot of it so I'll keep you posted.

Jenny, IMO I think your hair looks super in the after pictures too! Hard to tell from your pictures but does the hair look like Barbie hair? From the sample I got from Sara the hair looked a bit fake to me.

I sure hope it's good stuff when it's worn all together. So hard to tell with just a few strands in but my head is FULL of shrinkies and I have no more space to test drive more. The ends are looking like typical synth after several washings. ::keeping fingers crossed::

Yep, that's what the synth hair does.
I *like* when the wave drops out, just has a bit of body and looks like real hair.
If you have layers, it does bounce up more, all one length tends to lay flat.

You can set it on hot rollers, that's what I do.
Take a not so small section of hair, twist it then roll on hot rollers. Gives a good wave that doesn't drop too fast.

I'm embarking on starting my head today, woe is me.
I hate doing the back of my head.
I'll post pics when it's done, probably a few days.
haha.

Kim: I don't know if I'd say it looks like Barbie hair exactly (mine's bleach blonde, so it's more "Barbie" than most), but the hair does look like synth. I've worn a fair amount of human hair and many synth falls, and I can certainly tell it isn't human. Then again, I can spot human extensions a lot of the time, too. The biggest tip-off with the synth is the shine.

I do think that the shininess depends somewhat on the color you order (I've found this with PH and Dome), and I think blending is a must for more realistic results, but I don't think it really looks human.

I think that item is called the "Caruso". . . you know the "MOLECULAR" hair setter. . .

LMAO on this one since I have a history of buying every hair product ever sold and still having totally Shi**y hair.

Anyway, darn, wouldn't you know, I finally sold the Caruso at my last yard sale!!

That's funny, Fina. I ordered some of those Caruso rollers off eBay and am waiting for them to arrive. Will post pics after I attempt to use them.

As far as portable steamers go, does anyone know if these are the sort of thing that would work:

Jenny are the steamers for straightening or fixing the ends?? (not the steam curlers, but the ones you linked to)

I think they're for smoothing out the ends, but not for straightening exactly. I've never used one, though. Maybe someone else knows... :)

Jenny- I suggest sleeping with the hair in a braid every night. It really reduces tangling!

Also, yes, you can blast synth with a high-heat curling iron. You can even use some weak curling or flat-irons on it. Just nothing ceramic- those get too hot. If you're unsure about a heat tool, you can just test it on a scrap piece of hair. And steam is always fine.
