Subject: Removing Hair Extensions??
Date Posted: February 17 2005 at 2:37pm
Hi,
I am involved in an Easter production, and I play the part of Jesus. Other years I have been wearing a wig, but this year, we decided to try hair extensions. We tried them out the other night, and they worked great, right up until I had to take them out! What a nightmare!! We bought extensions from a beauty shop supply store (I think they were like $20). Along with that, they sold us a bottle of glue, a bottle of removal oil, and a shampoo that was supposed to remove the glue. The oil removed the extensions somewhat ok...The problem is I couldn''t get the glue out of my hair. These big black chunks kept coming out. I ended up washing my hair 15 - 20 times that night, and finally ended up using Dawn dish washing detergent, because it wouldn''t come out! The next day I still had it in my hair, but at least I could go to work. The glue is just nasty. Now I''m finding all of this black "tar" residue all over my body, stuck everywhere!
Can anyone give me advice as to what we are doing wrong? Are there better products or techniques we should be using?
Thanks,
Troy

troy -
i have had more luck in the past with the remover lotion, not the oil. the oil just made the glue form into chunky globs. for me what worked was to douse the glued areas with the lotion and let it sit on the glue for a good long while..maybe a half hour? after that, i used a wide toothed comb or something and the gunky chunky bits out and shampooed about a zillion times with a tea tree oil shampoo. other people may have better suggestions, though, i only did it once and that was enough frustration for me.

they sell a glue remover shampoo right along side the glue and remover oil, thats what Ive used in the past. I dont know how much glue you used but you only need a tiny bit. In fact, I put just a small bead along the weft and then spread it out with a q-tip

Do you happen to know what kind of glue it was? :)

Maybe for your next performance you could try clip ons. If your natural hair is long enough, clip ons are much more realistic than a wig (depending on the wig) and they clip in and out easily and are very secure.
My husband used them when he was in Jesus Christ Superstar. Who'd of though....?

you didn't do anything wrong...latex glue can be a royal pain to get out....i usually use the lotion first, leave it on for a good half hour or so, then use the oil and THEN the shampoo...sometimes i have to do another round of the oil after that to catch the residue, but even then, it usually mushrooms into a day-long event... i've heard great things about ChryssieV (spelling?) on this board...but i think you have to be a (fabulously wealthy) professional stylist to get your hands on the stuff...

You know what, if you really want to spend the $40 plus shipping on ChrissyV glue. Id just go to her website and try ordering it. Ive heard of people ordering it without a Cos. license even though it says you have to have one. It is a really good glue and its so easy to apply and remove. If it werent for the cost, Id probably still use it!

Sherrie~ I have the Chrissy V System DVD and have been pondering over buying her products for bonding. Metalgirl mentioned that a few of her clients complained of burning when the glue was applied. Did you have any problems with that? Did you see any damage to the clients hair with this glue at all? Thanks, I would really appreciate your input.....

SAS. I experience the same thing with any bonding glue. Its just a temporary sensation that subsides as soon as the glue starts to set. I get a far stronger burning sensation on my head from hair colors/dyes than I feel from the ChrissyV glue. Ive used ChrissyV alot and never had anyone say that it was a painful burning that lasted. More so just a temporary sensation that only lasts a very short time.
Edited to add....I think some people have more tender scalps than others so it may be that some people will feel it more. But I think any bonding glue stings a little at first.

Oh I think you will like it compared to other bonding glues. The ease of applying and removing is awesome. I just wish it wasnt so darn expensive! If you end up getting some Ill give you a few more tips about this glue that Ive figured out! Just let me know if you buy some!
Oh I never answered your question about damage from the glue. Honestly this is probably the gentlest bonding glue you can get. As you know, removal is where serious damage can happen if its not done correctly. But the ChrissyV glue really dissolves super easy in comparison to other glue. Of course you still have the fallen trapped hairs that you have to be careful when combing it out but you dont have to fight the glue trapped in the hair too. SO its much easier on the hair in my opinion.

Oh great!! That's what I really wanted to know. When I watched her remove the weft with her solution, it just slide right out....no problem!! When she brushed the hair afterwards it looked like she had quite a lot of loose hairs in the brush and it caught my attention right away. It really made me wonder when I saw that if it was hard on the hair. Yes, it's really expensive.....that's definitely the down side. If it is a better bonding product than other bonding products then I have no problem buying it. My main concern at the end of the day is what condition does it leave the clients hair in. Kewl Sherrie....thanks, I have to try it now!!

Overall, I liked the Chrissy V system. The burning sensation that my clients reported only lasted for a minute or so, but still, some were concerned about it.
If their hair did not get matted up, then removal is fairly easy, but don't expect to keep your nail polish on! The acetone remover takes the polish right off. I was wearing rubber gloves, which the acetone eats right through it.
I did have a few very nasty, tedious removals, but in those cases the women let the hair between the wefts get tangled. One stupid client, despite what I had told her, (5-7 weeks of wear) wore them for 17 weeks and it took me 5 hours to remove them, and I still have to cut chuncks of her hair out. I refused to do her hair after that. She was crying because she didn't want to be without her hair, so I told her to go get clip ins or find someone else to do her hair. She waited so long to get her extensions out because she is cheap and didn't believe me about what damage can be done if not cared for properly.
Anyway, it's an ok product, but after a few applications you can't get it off the top of the wefts, so it becomes bulky with layers of dried latex on the top. Also, if the hair if thin, than you can see the line latex on the top row through the hair. Overall, it's just too messy for me. I don't like glue methods.

metalgirl.....OMG she wore them for 17 weeks, how crazy is that! I had one who wore them about 13 weeks. For personal reasons I chose not to do her hair anymore but I did give her the remover and instructions but she left them in way beyond the 5/7 weeks. I get it was a nightmare to remove! I also had one that went 9 weeks and that was pretty tangled.
Save~A~Stray, I agree with everything metalgirl has said about the ChrissyV. glue. And the loose hairs you see in the video are just the fallen hairs that you normally would shed that have been trapped in the bond.
Thin Hair: And it is true about thin hair and the top row can be more visible with some people. The glue is hard to color match perfectly. Sometimes I have resorted to using LG on the top row since it dries clear. Fine Hair: I have also had to use LG on the bottom row on some people with fine hair. Since the bottom row w tends to slip more on fine hair (some people)

Thanks ladies for all your input here. I myself am not a big fan of bonding methods really. I just want to be able to offer all methods, but trying to choosing the best product for the job. I saw that you can intermix her bonding colors to get the best color match. Did you ladies do that or just used the colors as is? I have LG but was trying to find something a little gentler.
Just can't imagine leaving bonded extensions in the hair longer than 3-6 weeks max!! Don't they realize it is a temporary method only. 17 weeks takes the cake!!HeeHee

yes I have mixed the colors, but it is a big pain! And getting it right isnt easy, the color dries slightly different than when wet. Its too bad that her clear only works on white/platinum blonde (since it turns white after a couple of weeks) I wish she would develop a true clear bond.
Id say of all bonding glues the Chrissyv. is the gentlest. I dont think you would be unhappy with the ease of application/removal.

Yeah, a clear bond would be kewl. I thought the mixing might be a pain!! I will e-mail her and ask if she might think about or is planning on selling a clear bond. As that would be the best overall!! Thanks again for all your input!!

I added that link to my book marks in case I ever want to do extensions again. I really do prefer using wefts. Maybe thats because its the first type of extension I ever tried I dont know. $49 for the bond and $9 for the remover, that is expensive but worth it for 5-7 weeks of wear. About how many applications would you say you get from one bottle?
Oh yeah and do you use the sandwich method for applying?

Absolutely use the sandwiching method with Chrissyv. This is how I learned the sandwiching techniques. I think I got about 4 applications out of the can of glue from ChrissyV but Im not sure if its still the same size can or not. Its been a year or so since Ive bought any of her glue.

hmmm, 4 applications for $50 is roughly $12.50 per application, and if you get even 5 weeks wear, thats 20 weeks total, so in the long run, its not a bad deal.

I suppose its not a bad deal at all. I guess it just seems like, when Im doing other peoples hair I have to keep ordering cause I either dont have that particular color or not enough to do a complete head. It would just be more convienient it it were a clear bond that could be used on any color of hair! Instead of having to keep all the colors on hand.
