OK, here's a follow-up to this thread. http://talk.hairboutique.com/forum/viewthread.asp?forum=AMB_AP934431446&id=6951 - http://talk.hairboutique.com/forum/viewthread.asp?forum=AMB_AP934431446&id=6951
The below pic is the same test strand (it's Plastikhaar in the Mandel color) as the above link.
A good amount of hair (as you can see, it's about the diameter of a pencil so it's a big strand) was doubled over, looped and put inside the shrinkie. With a double-sided fusion wand, the tip is shrunk, and shaped into the size of a grain of rice. I put a grain of rice next to it so you can really see the size comparison.

There's no shedding with this strand. You can hold the end and pull as hard as you can and the tip won't move. Pinch the hair between the fingers and run down the strand and not one hair comes out. I put in about 6 of the WaWa strands done just like this last night and I haven't had one hair slip out.
Shrinkie success happens with the proper tools and good technique. They should all look as tight and solid as a grain of rice, just like the above photo or they shouldn't remain in your hair.

Thanks amm thats a perfect looking tip. But I have a few questions for ya!
1. I dont doubt that it would work with synthetic hair. But what do you think about doing pretips this way with human hair, with the shrinking/expanding that human hair does when wet/dry?
2. Now when you are ready to apply the strand do you apply the shrinky/tip directly inside of the other shrinkie with none of it sticking out the top?

Thanks! Wish I could get the ones I put in the back of my head to look like that. For a DIY it's almost impossible.

The pressure of the shrinkie alone needs to keep the hair in the center secured. The outside gets even more staying power because of the residue. I wonder if a drop of glue in the loop and then closing the shrinkie would help if there's any expansion issues. That's a good point re: porous human hair. I guess it would have to be tried.

Yep. Snug as a bug. The tips I have in now are no bigger than if I had tipped the hair with LG and then topped it off with a harder glue to keep it secured.
I'm not saying this is a perfect method. It's just one more hashmark on the neverending trial and error side.

Is the top of the strand still open? Could you put a drop of nail glue on the top for added stability?

Well I'll be. I usually -hate- pre-tippipng, but doing it with a shrinkie could actually make life tolerable.

What about pre-tipping with a shrinkie and then putting it in a micro ring?

I don't see why not, Em. It might be a good idea for you. I'd like to try it too actually, because I think pretipping a bunch of them off the head would allow me to get the techinque down better, and it seems so much easier than standard pretipping. You'd probably just have to make them a bit smaller (than AMM's) to fit into the rings. :)
