I was looking at hand held steamers for curling synth and I was wondering, what kind of rollers would you use? Just plain old rollers like the old pink kind? or a perm rod type roller?

Hey Em,
I think the steamers are usually used to smooth out/straighten synth, but I imagine if you put your hair in rollers, then steamed it, it would work quite well, too. I would think you could use any type of rollers (although I wouldn't want to use Velcro). And perming rods might work great, because you really need to use the smaller rollers to get a good wave.
I used the Caruso steam ones last night and they worked really well; next time, I'll use the smaller rollers, though, and leave them in a longer than recommended.

I would be afraid of burning my head if I tried to use a steamer on rollers on my head! Im thinking that steam cap that was posted in another gread might be a really good idea for synthetic hair. Let me see if I can find it again!

LOL sorry I was thinking of using it on my wig so the steam wont be anywhere near my head. Since the wig I ordered is very straight, I thought I could throw a curl into it every now and then and mix it up a bit.

You could also use the flexible rod curlers. I don't know if that's the exact name for them, but they're a piece of wire around between like 8 and 12 inches long covered with foam that can be used for perms or regular roller sets. I bought some to curl my hair by wearing overnight, and they work great (and come in many sizes). I bought 'em at Sally's.

You -could- actually do this...some steamers are not powerful enough to burn. I had a Steam Bullet once, and it was gentle enough the I could put my hand in front of the stream. It sucked for sealing dreads, but cleaned my oven pretty well.
For steamers, the defining thing are their wattage. For on-head steaming, don't use anything more powerful than 900 watts (a Steam Bullet)- for off-head steaming, 900 and up is fine. I've used the Biagiante SteamXpress, the Conair Compact and the Conair Professional steamers, and heard good things about the Euro Pro and...some other I can't recall atm.
Aside from steaming the wig, you could also blast it with a hairdryer or dip it in boiling water, then let it cool/dry before uncurling. Has the same effect.
Oh, you'll also want to make sure your wig is either kanekalon or monofiber. Anything else won't respond to heat or steam.

Oh yeah I always make sure my wigs are kanekalon, I learned that lesson with the very first wig I ever bought. It was some wierd fiber stuff they dont even use anymore. I think this wig was dug out of a warehouse somewhere and was old, it even smelled old. I did some research and talked to some people and they said kanekalon was the way to go. The next wig I bought I made sure was kanekalon and it was great, in fact I still have it and its going on 4 years old and still looks great.

As for rollers...I'm thinking those vented plastic ones would let more steam through them than foam ones? Just guessing, though.

Thanks Rae, that is a great suggestion. Vented ones would let the steam penetrate the hair and probably make it curl better. Gotta write all this down for my next trip to the store.

I have steamed synth hair on perm rods and it worked great and perm rods are cheap. Just let the synth cool and dry on them. And it should be fine. I use the Mac Daddy of steamers, the Jiffy, but any other steamer should work fine.
