First I would like to say I've been reading a lot of the posts and they are extremely helpful. But I would like to just clarify a few things and possibly get some help.

I'm wanting to do either shrinkies which I'm waiting for or pinch braids if I can actually teach my husband how to before he leaves for San Diego at the end of march.....It seems from the posts pinch braids work better with syn but do shrinkies work better with syn or with real hair?....

and this is sorta off topic but defintly a problem and sorta why I'm wanting to do extensions so If you can help sweet if not feel free to ignore..lol...

OK...I'll give ya a little back round just in case I'll try to make it short...

I've been dying my hair for longer then I would like to admit but the past year or 2 I have stuck with basically variations of red I normally use Feria Sunlit Dark and MCMAX scarlet fever and more recently L'Oreal Excellence Hicolor Permanent Hair Color one shade of red or another.... mixing them a little together and between dyes depending on the color I use manic panic either vampire red, pillarbox red..or a mixture of both...a lot depends on my mood...i always used just the run of the mill developer....Before moving I decided to bleach my hair and sorta start over....and the only differnce I made was the developer..I used the feria developer they sold for the feria L'Oreal for it and
so on and it didn't take so I ended up with bright red manic panic hair for the fam for x-mas..

on our way down here we stopped in Knoxville over night and this being a mnth or so after leaving Wa I decided to re-do my hair...thinking I just messed something up the first time still using what I had when I left..i.e. developers same colors ect but again all it did was basically bleach my hair well most of it and take chunks of it with it.....so a few weeks ago I tried again but used regular developer and left out the L'oreal same thing happened....the only dye that seems to take is manic panic which with my current hair length and at some point having to look somewhat professional I can't keep doing...so i decided to do the hair extentions not only to give me back the thickness and i had but the color it is now always looks better long least to me it does... so even more of a reason...

OK so I lied I did ramble a little.....but man my hair is driving me nutzo to no end.....why the heck won't it take any normal dye anymore....well any help is greatly appreciated

You really overdid it on the hair treatments. You've taken your hair past the point of normal response to bleaching and coloring. Now that it's so porous, it won't take any color properly.

What you need to do is grow out the ruined hair and cut it off. Your virgin hair will grow in normal again.

To ease this transition, I recommend you visit a colorist who specializes in fixing hair color mistakes.

Ya you're probably right....maybe the change in time zones is just making me brain fart more then usual....my gut said NO to bleach but I did it anyway...always trust your gut I guess...probably why I keep finding reasons why we should have stayed in Wa or go back to Ill ....
now I just need to find a good colorist maybe I can just ask Hubby to let me get extentions done profesionally as well....... so if anyone has any recomandations for the Charleston SC area I'm all ears......

I just kinda went through this yesterday. In the last 3 months ive been 1B-off black, a 613-ashey blond and #30 auburn. I had all three colors in my hair and it looked like sh*t.

I went to Sallys and bought a color stripper, NOT A BLEACH, but a color stripper. You put that on, then you need something called Protein Filler, it corrects the porosity of your hair, then you can color it any color you want. I also bought a conditioning mask that you leave on for 5 minutes and WALLLLLLLA, my hair looks and feels great and best of all its all one color again...lol...

I would really suggest you get the Protein Filler. Its super simple to use and really helps over processed hair.

Hey Rachel,

Welcome! I'll leave it to others to advise you about the color. But as far as the shrinkies v. pinchbraid decision, both methods work perfectly well with either synth or human; it doesn't really matter which kind of hair you use.

Imo, both are good methods; it really just depends on your hair and your preference.

Good luck! :)

I feel your pain.

During my young blonde days I went through two bad color experiences.
One new stylist was giving me foil highlights. She wasn’t paying attention and brought my color up too light, so she threw on ash blonde. Wha-La, moss tinted highlights. (shudder)

The second colorist fixed the first's mistake, but was forced by the salon to change her products a few years later. (Trained on Goldwell, used Redken. I should've run.) Wha-La, variant shades of brown, green and gold.

I researched and found a great lady who’s miraculous with color. I’ve been with her over 6 years now.

IMO - I understand that you want to keep costs down, but now is not the time to "go cheap.” It sounds like you're past the point of no return. PLEASE, find a professional with the training, knowledge and experience to correct the problem. You're gambling your hair to save $40-$50. It ain't worth it.

IMHO - Call me chicken, but I'll never go back to home colorant products. I love my tri-highlighted red too much. Guess I'm spoiled.

First of all, red is a very difficult color to get out of hair. But you definitely blew out the hair's cuticle, so it won't accept any color.

You will need to see someone who is good with corrective color, and they will apply the proper filler to replace the missing undertone of whatever color you want for your end result. And because the cuticle is very damaged, the results may not be as perfect as you like, but a good colorist can get you close to what you what.

When depositing a darker color, you need to use a demi permanent color (they don't contain ammonia-you don't need it to go darker) and a develper that's a very low volume, like 5-7, not 20 (which is probably the volume of the Feria developer)

So get to a good corrective colorist (and you may have to spend some good $ for that), and do intense reconditioning treatments.

Good for you! You won't regret it.

Be sure to have all the products you used written down, in order of use and approx. date/time used. My current colorist fixs home coloring disasters regularly. She says this is necessary to determine what the hair been exposed to and how many times. A good colorist is VERY thorough and will explain EVERYTHING before starting. (Mine would be a saint by now if it was up to me.)

You may not look stunning when you walk out, but you'll feel and look better.

Keep us posted on the outcome.
I'm sending positive thoughts your way.

Just to add my two cents..... you might just go to rite aid or wherever and get a bottle of Fancy Full temporary toner (not chemical reaction) and use it on freshly shampooed hair to tone you down or warm you up, whatever the case may be, while you take a month or so to give yourself some deep conditioning and protein treatments and lay off the heat styling.
Also, there's a mineral supplement called MSM that really helps your hair grow.
My hair is in the toilet this week too. Never have your hair colored the week of your stylists wedding..... they have a hard time concentrating. Christina

Hey Rachel,

Dome arrives quite quickly (I'd say five business days or so), but they charge a fortune for shipping. PlastikHaar also has a priority-shipping option you might want to check out. :)

Rachelrolen,

Hey, not too bad!
It's a flattering color on you. Honest! I know it's not what you want, but at least your in a normal color range and it doesn't look like you have bald patches. I've seen worse.
You have something you can work with and you still have hair in your head. It's a good start.

Scothyroo.....thanks for the supplement name....next time i get a chance I'll look for it

Jenny_rr.....I was looking at it last night and it was like $111 **DOH** so I decided to try that WA WA you guys have been talking about and get some PH as well

KAT B... Thanks.....it's just manic panic vampire red and there are a few darker streaks from the black under lights or whatever I usually have...No bald patches just extremly uneven..use to be kinda like how sarah jessica parker had it in the first wives club just not as pronounced....It's defintly thinner then it use to be but some of it is from a few yrs ago when I first got extensions....I'm starting to think some of my hair like the part near my crown was being chewed off at night by my cat when we were driving here....

anywho got my shrinkies and stuff today..got some pre-tipped hair just so I can see round about size it should be...now hubby can practice braiding on something other then my head...but it's going to be locked up so cat can't get near it...lol...
