OK. The process took 7 hours for her to install the hair. She put in about 4 bags of Plastikhaar. (Birke, Blonde, Platinum Blonde, and WinterBlond). So far it has not relaxed AT ALL and I've washed it twice. . .I put in a few strands of Wa Wa 613 but have been finding that it does *not* curl. I think I need to try the bigger barrel. Thanks Jenny for your experiments on curling.

I had to put shrinkies in around the front & crown to get it to get it to blend and I'm still working on that.

My befores are AWFUL (so bad I had to hide my face -- it was just TOO ugly) but I really want y'all to see the miracle of this:

Before - Back

After - Back (after being cut also)

Before - Front ( I am smiling because I'm about to get my hair!!!)

After - Front - Pre-cut or style or anything: (I left it like this for about 10 minutes...)

After - after styling, shrinkies, and washing:

This is *completely* wash and wear hair. I do NOTHING to it, just work with my own hair to get it to blend.

The stylist gave me a bottle of Pro-Hair spray. Apparently Pro Hair and Dome are the same, but the two founders parted ways. She used a macrame stitch and heat sealed it with a small amount of glue on the synthetic hair.

I'll write more later -- just wanted to get these out there!

A synth convert -- at least for now --

Fina

You look gorgeous! I can't wait to hear more!

So, you had the Dome method? (did it take 1 or 2 people to apply the hair?)

Save a Stray and I are signed up to take the Prostyles class in April, and seeing your beautiful hair makes me even more excited to take the class!

What texture is that hair?

Oh my gawd, you look so HOT!!! I absolutely LOVE it--amazing. I'm so glad you're back, Fina!

So that's the 28mm? And you've washed it twice and it hasn't dropped at all? This is so cool....

Did you wash it in cold water? If that's the 28mm, it's got much more staying power than the 50mm--which is good news for all you curly-haired girls out there.

When you get a chance, Fina, tell us everything, okay? I need to know what you're doing (or not doing) to keep it looking fabulous...products, heat, washing, brushing, the whole nine yards!

Horray for PlastikHaar!

More details:

Yes it took two people. There is *no way* that Dome/Pro Hair can be done with only one person. Since my hair is so fine, some of the little tiny braiding points in the front can show pretty easily. But I really don't care -- I think they look kinda cool. . .It is AWESOME that you gals are taking the class. I highly recommend this method

The lady who did it left virtually *none* of my hair "sticking through" in the back. In other words my hair is completely in those braids. She said that would protect my hair which as you can see is QUITE damaged from the years of Great Lengths. She said that as time goes on and my hair gets healthier she would be able to leave more space/hair in between the rows.

Regarding washing - the reason I got that 28mm is that I wanted it wavy AND I didn't want to have to treat it with kid gloves. I LOVE MY HOT SHOWERS and I've washed it in just normal shower-temperature water. After washing I condition my scalp area/my hair with regular conditioner, and I spray a fabric softener/water mix on to the synth hair. Then I rinse the whole thing.

Pro Hair makes a "conditioning spray" that is supposedly also OK for real har, and I spray with that post-shower (I'm accustomed to some kind of post-shower treatment as we all are having worn human hair.)

I kind of comb the little bit of my hair that's visible, dry it, and let my scalp/synth hair dry naturally for a while. Then I dry my scalp with the dryer.

The synth hair dries quite quickly, and I kind of finger toss it, and brush it when it's dry. It is *VERY* responsive to brushing and just kind of twirling it around your hand or whatever. . . I didn't want it to be this curly forever but it sure is easy!!

Does this answer questions for now?? Bring 'em on!

oh good grief woman -

thing of beauty. what else is there to say?

so did your stylist give directions for smoothing the ends with a hairdryer? are you gonna sleep with it up in a bun or in a braid? when are you supposed to "redo" - 2-3 months? are you gonna go back to atlanta?

beautiful!

p.s. don't think i didn't notice the y'all - wears off on you doesn't it?

We seriously need a new icon for "sex on a stick"!

That's a good question: Are you sleeping with it in a braid or a bun?

Also, with the heat seals, do you have any idea how many were installed, or how many rows, etc., you have?

I cannot say enough about this haar--so awesome!!!

P.S.--Your before pic is exactly like how my hair looked when my fusion was removed, only mine looked quite a bit worse. :)

Fina Fina,

I LOOOOOOOOOOVE YOUR HAIR

That did it! I just ordered the PlastikHaar color ring with Priority (how many days will it take BTW?). I love the waves, I love how it looks on you and to me your picture does not look like you are wearing non-human hair; it just looks like really healthy shiny hair.

Jenny, what wave did you get?

Mine's the 50mm, which is looser, so you'll definitely want the 28mm. In fact, there are several curl patterns beyond those two, but I think you have to special order them.

I think PH priority is five days, but don't quote me on that....

I was under the assumption, the Prostyles method uses the 3 strand braid, while Dome or Prohair uses a 4 strand braid (and therefore takes 2 people to apply it).

When I signed up for the Prostyles class, I asked them several times if their method required 2 people, and they said "no". I hope they were telling me the truth, because I don't have nor do I want to get an assistant!

I think Bridget 'Boogiemama' does Prostyles. If you're out there (or anyone else that knows for sure) can you please comment?

metalgirl, thats my understanding too, Prostyles is a 3 way braid and Dome is a four way braid. But Fina said that hers was done with a 'macrame' stitch and used a small amount of glue, so maybe Fina's stylist has modified the method with some of her own techniques.

Hey Metalgirl,

Prohair and ProStyles are the same thing (ProStyles is just the name of it in the U.S., rather than the U.K.). I believe Boogiemama (and several others, for that matter) do a slight variation on the traditional Dome method that enables them to do it themselves, rather than with an assistant. I think it is a 3-way, rather than a 4-way braid.

There's more info. about heat-sealing (and the variations therein) on this page: http://www.quinnster.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ - http://www.quinnster.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/

Does anyone know where Boogiemama is, by the way? (Probably doing lots of heads--lol!) I miss all of her very sound advice....

:)

Edited to say: I distinctly remember Boogiemama saying that she didnt box-braid. She explained her technique somewhere, although I can't remember where now.... :)

My stitch is a 4-way macrame stitch that apparently CAN be taught to be done by just one person. In fact, as I was having mine done, the assistant kept getting tripped up because she had learned the "one person" method and was now doing the 2-person.

The stylist said that on caucasian hair she puts a small amount of glue *on the synthetic hair* (not on mine) that has been wrapped around at the end of the stitch, then "pinches" it with the tool to kind of melt the hair onto itself and the glue.

So far so good - the little braids feel quite secure. Kristin - I think there are 5 rows in the back and I'll take a picture of them with the hair parted.

She said something interesting which I have to agree with: that when you get to the fine hair in the front, with fusion, everybody wants "small" attachments but these actually are the worst thing for that very fine hair. I felt like I *had* to touch it up with shrinkies and still need to do more, actually.

The hair is very shiny and full of body -- I was working at a trade show this weekend and I am not kidding, I was treated like a celebrity. So many people came up to me and commented on how stunning my hair was. I was quite self-conscious of it because it's so "big".

Regarding the blowing of the ends to smooth them. honestly they haven't needed it so far. I brush them well after using the fabric softener & Pro Hair spray but have been very wary of getting heat near them for this reason:

When I was installing the shrinkies in the front, one time the heat tool got too close (apparently) to the hair not in the shrinkie and let me tell you -- that hair just FRIED and shriveled. It is REALLY nasty when it gets fried and there's nothing you can do about it.

Also the hair definitely has memory. For example if I put it on top of my head in a high ponytail it sticks out really far when I take it down.

I've also gone in and layered it (probably too aggressively) to get an even fullness -- it seems to be the fullest at the end, wherever that lands. So I've cut into it to get an even fullness rather than that "A" shaped hair.

I sleep with it braided or up. Bettie (my stylist) recommended that I sleep in a satin cap or on a satin pillowcase. . . well I got a satin do-rag thingie and it won't stay on my head and I don't really think it matters anyway.

I'm thinking that I'll get 2 solid months out of this and I may need to take the front sections out before then and replace them with shrinkies.

This hair looks *so* fabulous and shiny, in a really great way, that the hardest part is getting your own hair to blend well. Well-placed fusion extensions (shrinkies) are an absolute NECESSITY and the "final" styling makes all the difference in the world.

I paid $275 (and a very generous tip) to get this done. The PlastikHaar was, as you know, about $45 plus shipping. . .and I have *NEVER* loved my hair as much as I love it now. I need to also be more vigilant with how she mixes the colors -- one side of my head is noticeably a different color that then other. My business partner says "I have so much going on" color-wise that it's not really noticeable, but I definitely notice it. I was afraid of it being too ash-ey so I mixed in the Winterblond which is a true #27, but it's really quite red and just not necessary. The Birke & Platinum mixed together, along with the Blond, make an absolutely gorgeous mix.

Sorry to go on and on. But I am SO SO THRILLED -- my whole head feels better with these little macrame bonds -- better than it ever did with the GL.

One strange thing -- Bettie said I should wash my hair less often -- as little as once a week -- but that is simply not possible for me. My own hair starts to look SO crappy. Another woman who got her hair done after me said that Bettie told her to *WAIT* seven days to wash it to "let the bonds set". I DO NOT recall her telling me that -- and I sure hope I haven't wrecked the longevity of these bonds by washing it. If 7 days is a requirement then this is not feasible for me!! I'll let you know how they last.

Thanks SO MUCH for your compliments!! AND all the info you all shared.

So we'll see how this goes and continue the experiment!!

Fina

Birke, Blond, Platin Blond, Winterblond? I just looked at my color ring... that is a really creative color mix! 3 of them are medium/darkish blondes and the platin is very light, but on you the mix looks like beach girl blonde! That's an art school-quality color combination. And I am DIGGING the 28 mm curl! I'm ready to faint.

FinaFina, Your hair looks fantabulous!!!! Love it!

Like other posters said the Dome method is a 4way braid, and the ProStyles method is a 3way braid. And the *glue* you speek of is actually a type of spirit gum that is used, so it will NOT harm your natural hair. It washes out. I love the Dome Method and prefer it but it is so hard to find an assistant that is willing to stand there with you for all that time.

Yaaaayyy for you, you look great.

About blowing out the ends, Fina, I really would not recommend it until you absolutely have to. I think if you blow out the hair, it will go completely straight--and I don't mean straight like when you blow-out human hair with a round brush and it still has some curl on the ends; I mean pin-straight. I think that's basically the deal with synth hair, although you could always conduct a test on a sample first; that's probably the best plan. Perhaps steaming would produce different results; I don't know.

In fact, does anyone know if you can blow-out the ends of synth with a round brush to make it look like it still has some body? I sort of tried it myself, but it didn't work too well. :)

All - THANKS so much for your rave reviews. . .it really takes hair afficianados to truly appreciate this ARTFORM. And it is an artform, isn't it?? Comments/answers:

All you California Girls out there: I live in Texas which is in the MIDDLE of the country and I come to California quite often as well. . . customers in Sacramento/N. Cal area, tradeshows in S. Cal, etc., so I hold high hopes for meeting at least one of you in person!!

Jenny - I think there are 5 rows in the back. She actually started with the *sides* and did vertical rows (ear to part-ish), then did the back last. Also, yes I'm going to try to avoid the blow dryer. And really, it just hasn't needed it. A little spritzing with the ProHair stuff and a good brushing really seems to help it a lot.

Kimbearly - Yes I agree with you, it *does* looke like really healthy shiny hair. I LOVE THE SHINE.

Save-a-Stray - THANKS and thanks for the heads up on the process. . .it really was like the Dome video you sent!!

Syren - I take pride in that styling!! Bettie did the initial cut with a razor, but I did the real work! And thanks for the art-school color combo comment. I'm not thrilled with the Winterblond portions of it, but the Birke/Blond/Platinum is smokin. I'm thinking of doing some SatinBlond shrinkies. The SatinBlond color is SOOOO beautiful.

Kristin - You are always a gorgeous inspiration to us all!

Today I get to show it off at the OFFICE --

There is *no way* that Dome/Pro Hair can be done with only one person

Oh yes you can.
I used an assistant for YEARS doing the 4 strand box braid (which is this macrame thing your stylist is saying).
I was delighted to learn the 3 strand method because now I don't have to pay an assistant, or have late assistants or no show assistants or annoying assistants. JUST ME! And it looks just fine and lasts just as long. And I can get done quicker instead of working with slow people.
The "glue" is spirit gum. I use it on everyone, it's harmless.

Kimberly: My curls didn't really "come back," but I've been able to create some curl with steam rollers and *gulp* a curling iron. The wave didn't completely drop out (although it loosened a lot) until I blow-dried it with the brush. Blowing the hair out will make it seriously pin-straight (at least with the 50mm, although I would imagine this applies to all synth hair).

I actually blowed the hair with a round brush this morning and was able to create a slight bend on the ends, but this is neither here nor there for you, since you need serious curls. From the sounds of it, the 28mm will be a great match, and since you're wearing clips, I think it'll be awhile before you need to blow-out the ends.

Hell, who knows?, maybe with enough care, the hair doesn't really need to be blown-out. Honestly, if they're clips, I really would think you'd be best washing the hair very, very little; just use Febreeze or something, and the initial curl should hold up well. And if Fina's washed hers twice with no loss of curl, that's certainly encouraging.

In other words, don't go by me--lol! At this point, I've conducted so many experiments on it. What's actually suprising is that given everything I've done to the hair, it's holding up pretty well. After 9 washes or so and tons of heat-styling, it still looks better than human, imo.

Tomorrow, I'll post pictures after I get steamed. In a week or so, I'll post my results with the velvet-covered hot rollers.

Bottom line: The haar is $13 a bag and looks amazing--how can you really go wrong?

GIRLS - I LOVE YA!!

LOL!!

Boogiemama - that's IT - you are doing my next batch -- I just gotta see you in action! Gals, anybody up for a road trip? Or shall we just all meet in a central location and fly Boogiemama in and have her to OURSELVES until we are done with her? er, I mean, until she is done with us??

um, ahem, the curl is, um, dropping ever so. . . slightly. . .I will post some pics today after I fix my camera. Yes, it broke. My dog knocked it out of my hands yesterday and, well, you know. . .

I've been told I look like Lisa K, but I really did think the hair was more RITA. THANKS JENNY - you crack me up.

-Fina

p.s. OT: I Need to re-start another post on using shrinkies with LG only as pretips: I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS - the LG Is a B**CH to get out of your hair -- I know amm said to put nail glue over the tips -- but dummy me I didn't --

I want Boogiemama to do my hair! I'll go to Seattle if I have to, but if she wants to come to CA, that would be great too!
