Hi everyone,
I decided to give the WAWA one more chance, so I ordered the wave 14" color tipped 1B/27 from hair sisters, hoping that the "honey blonde" was a bit darker then the strawberry blonde. It wasn't. I am just not a blonde. :)
so, I played around with the curl, following the directions this time! nice, but I hated the color - too much of a difference between the two - and the other colors were either too dark - the browns, or too light - the blondes. I have med light brown hair - I have dyed my hair to match, but I am trying to get my hair back to a healthy state.
I have tried indian ink - all sorts of different paints and stains...nothing would stay in this hair.
Anyway, I teach art in a afterschool program and I was showing them how to tie-dye - with rubberbands....
I had a bunch of fabric dye - and one of the kids wanted a light brown....as I was tie-dying...it dawned on me that this stuff just might work, as it is designed to work on synth. fabric.
I could not wait to get home!
first, I just took a pre-tipped and placed it in the container overnight. This morning, it washed right out, so I decided to ...follow the directions again and this time heated the liquid dye straight from the bottle and added about 1/4cup of salt.
wet down the hair and stuck it in.
It worked!!!!!
I was a bit concerned that the base purple color would come through instead, but I now have a nice light brown, it even seemed to tone down the black top -
the pictures are awful, but once I pre-tip and dye everything, and place it on my head I will post another picture.
Think of all the different colors you could make!!!

Did you use RIT dye??...I used it on some Dome that doesn't match and nothing....But all I had was the poeder stuff so I had to use water but if you used the liquid stuff and no water I may give it another shot

Yes, it was RIT dye - dark brown and I also used the tan. mixed them together. it was not the powder. and when I added some water to see if it would become a bit lighter, it did not take at all.
It works better if the hair is damp/wet. I heated the dye and salt to almost boiling, turned off the stove and added the hair pieces and let them sit for about 40 minutes or so.

Thanks so much for this post!  I got some 27 Wa Wa that was a little too strawberry for me, so I followed your method, using the tan and brown like you described.  I didn't "stew" my hair very long, as I didn't want it too dark, just less "carroty."

Pleased to report that it is now a lovely "brown sugar" color (kind of the same color as Sarah Jessica Parker's when she signed up to represent Garnier).  It was seriously funky after taking a color bath, but I smoothed it right out and into big waves with my large curling iron.

I'm liking this stuff already and I don't even have it on my head...

I am so going to do this. The strawberry blonde is definitely not a color I can wear with much success (in large quantities, anyway). I did blend a little with the darker auburn and it's a little better but I really want a softer brown. Thanks for the tips!

was just wondering everyones opinion if there would be anyway to lift the wawa color? im about a 22 and the strawberry is too dark for my taste but i could see how it would be harder to go lighter than darker

plus just wondering if you noticed any quality difference in the hair after the dying process?  thanks :)

I dont think it would be possible to 'lift' the color at all.

Yeah--I really don't see any way to lift it either.  The OPH is supposed to come in a greater variety of blondes, I think (12, 18, 22, 24 maybe?  got this from the Royal Imex site), so you might go that route, LD.

And as for difference in the hair...I will have to admit that I was more than a little concerned with the way the WaWa looked coming out of the color bath--it was frizzy and looked rough and felt rough and sort of looked like a twenty dollar bill going up in flames, to be honest.

However!  After fabric softener-ing it and spending some quality time with a wide tooth comb and curling iron, it's back in action.  Not *quite* as soft and silky as it was originally, but every bit as smooth and shiny.  It has the original "body" feel to it too--it was stiff and weirdly "bendy" until it hit curling iron rehab.

Camera's got dead batteries, or I would have taken pictures

Oh, I forgot to ask this question.

Since WaWa is basically bulk, you couldn't stir it around in this solution or it'd be a big mess.

Does this salt/dye mix do harm to pre-made tips?

anyone have any idea if Special Effects (veggie dye) would work on WaWa?
