I admit that I did not get my hair trimmed like I should but I saw my stylist yesterday after 8 months and she said I needed to get about 2 inches off the bottom because of split ends and to get an even line.

Does an even line look better? I am not sure. My hair is waist length. I wouldn`t let her trim my hair and told I would think about it.

Any suggestions?

getting it cut in a straight line basically makes it more thick and healthier...

this is because hairs grow at different lengths and since you hadn`t gotten cut in that long its VERY uneven

and only 2 inches actually isn`t much considering the fact that you have gone w/o a cut in 8 months

Tammi,

I don`t know without seeing your hair if 2 inches is what you need, but if you do need 2 inches it you may be impressed by how much healthier it looks when it is cut. I went through a similar experience recently, and was sad to have to cut at all in this growing out stage. But, when the stylist evened it out and cut off the dead ends, it was bouncier & fuller & now that those few inches have grown back, my hair is soo much better!

Hi Tammi,

There are two schools of thought about how to wear your hair and some believe that au natural with an uneven line works well. Others believe it should be even. If your hair has split ends you may want to consider getting them removed. If not, then you be the judge of what works for you and wear your hair with an even line or not.

I alternate between an even line and an uneven line depending on if my hair is in great shape or not.

Best wishes,
Karen

PS. A good friend of mine who has hair to her waist wears it cut in a "u" shape at the bottom where the middle is longer than the sides. Some people prefer that to the straight line or the uneven line. A gorgeous woman who posts at The Long Hair Site wears her hair jagged and it looks stunning.

Again, I think it is up to the individual to decide what look is right for them.

Let me know if I can help further.

Best wishes,
Karen

I wore my hair straight across the bottom for one reason -- if my hair was uneven, u-shaped, or layered -- it would tangle.

I don`t like the straight across look for me because I get "helmet head" (I`m not long yet).

But I do have a personal theory that the more of your hair that is together the less likely individual hairs are to split because they are more buffered...gabi

Hi Gabi,

You make a good point. I just got my hair trimmed on Tuesday (just trimmed, not cut) and my stylist did a very slight "u" shape for me. It looks cool and I am enjoying it. :-)

Best wishes,
Karen

I have alot of natural body so I can get away with this. I have hair that is right in between waist and classic length. Most of the length I have is cut straight. The sides (from my ears and forward) and what were once bangs are a little shorter, but no shorter than my waist. Because of the body, it makes the sides wavy looking, and the ends blend well. I have never liked the U shape mainly because that takes alot of effort to maintain neat, and a straight, blunt cut makes hair look alot fuller at longer lengths.

I also don`t trust anyone with scissors around my hair, so if you go see a stylist, be very careful. I`ve been trimming my own hair for a very long time. Take a look at your ends. If they`re really dry and brittle feeling, you might try treating your hair with olive oil. I tried jojoba oil on my hair and it responded ok to it, but it loves olive oil. Use however much you want; with my length I use about a quarter sized puddle on each side. I let it absorb for about an hour, then I shampoo it out, condition. It makes my hair super soft and shiny. Try this a few times, like every fourth day or something, and you might notice a difference in your ends. If after about a month of this your hair still feels dry and brittle, go to the stylist and have her (or him) take what you think it needs trimmed. An inch is roughly the length of your index fingertip.

1"/36"/42" to as long as it will grow.
