Ms. Dion appeared on "Dateline" and was interviewed by Maria Shriver. When asked why she cut her hair short, she said that she didn't like the way it fell forward over her face during her new Las Vegas show (she does a lot of dancing). She also said that she didn't want to spend 3 hours a day doing her hair and dealing with extensions.
Still think it's the wrong move for her. She looks terrific in those glamour commercials she did for Chrysler before the chop job. (And Chrysler has to be sick that, after laying out all that dough, she changed her look so drastically.)

I know i was sick when i saw it. It hurts my eyes, wrong style wrong color, wrong lenght. she should fire her hair stylist, I've seen better styles on a 4 year old who cut her hair her self. Not being harsh just telling it the way it is, she needs to grow some of that hair out and find some color, some one should tell dion that fake blonde look is out now, and tell Shakria to.

Doesn't look that bad "in the right light." In the wrong light is another post entirely.

Celine's hair was cut by a very good friend of mine - Ken Paves - a celebrity hairstylist. We talk every few days by phone or by email.
I actually talked to Ken on his cell phone just minutes before he did Celine's hair for her two most recent music videos shot in LA last week AND they completely changed her look by adding long extensions. In fact, when I caught him getting ready for the video shoot, he was in the process of finishing the coloring of the extensions.
When she does TV ads like the one for Chrysler, Ken and her other stylists will be styling her in longer wigs, clip ons and extensions to completely alter her current style and look.
I personally asked Ken about the new super short cut and he was very candid. He said that Celine really wanted the short cut for her show (as she told Maria) and her day to day lifestyle. He said it was totally her choice and she really does like her hair to be easy to deal with for a number of personal and professional reasons.
Although Ken is no longer doing Celine's hair on a daily basis in Las Vegas, his assistant Justin is doing her hair. Ken will be doing special photo shoots with Celine and special TV and other appearances. He and Rita Hazan will be flying to Vegas every few weeks to update her color and style.
He said her hair and look will change constantly for those types of events when she is fulfilling a contractural obligation where the sponser can indicate a certain desired look. This is very common these days since models and celebs constantly change their hair to suit their own personal goals but might conflict with what the sponsers want to evoke.
The task for you all now is to find photos where she appears differently because from what Ken said, her hair will look quite different for the videos.
Best wishes, Karen
PS. Please know that many of the celebrities that are written about on this Talk board lurk and read what you have all written about them and their hair. Try to put yourself in their shoes and remember that it is possible to critique someone's hair or hairstyle w/out making it personal.

Hiya Karen,
To be honest, many times, the criticism of the style is directed toward the decision making of the celebrity rather than the skill of the stylist. For example, Celine's cut appears to be extremely well done, expertly sculpted for the desired length and texture of her hair. That said, it still doesn't look good on her at all. She's tall and thin with a narrow face and a prominent nose, all of which are balanced out when she has longer and/or more voluminous hair. As I said in another post, just because you get a great cut doesn't mean that it looks great on you. We've all seen folks who have a terrific hairstyle that just isn't flattering on them. Celine is an example of that. So, Ken did his job to the best of his ability; Ms. Dion just shouldn't have asked him to.
By the way, don't think I'm letting all celebrity stylists off the hook here. Faith Hill didn't get that platinum hack of a bob a few years ago because she asked for it.
As usual, JF
P.S. You gotta send me an email and let me know who lurks. The only celeb that ever wrote me back was Debra Norville and I had only heard rumors that some folks at "Days of Our Lives" used to check out the column and may still check out the boards. Then again, curiosity killed the Flea.

Hey JF,
Your Celine post above is an absolute perfect example of how to critique a hairstyle w/out making it a personal thing against the celebrity. Please don't get me wrong. I think it is very important to continue to freely post observations of celebrity hair w/ all the good and bad comments about the hairstyles. Afterall, that is the whole purpose for this board which was started in your honor (for those who don't know) so many years ago. In fact, other than HairTalk, Celebrity HairTalk is one of the oldest boards here at HB.com. And, Celebrity HairTalk is read not only by celebs but by many others in the biz including editors who write about celebrities and agents, producers and press people. I know this because I get emails and phone calls to that fact. I am not sure you know this but the HB site receives an average of over 750,000+ hits per day. A lot of the traffic goes to the boards here and a lot goes to the articles & columns.
But I disgress............................
What I was trying to say is that while it is great to say Celine's style does not suite her face shape or her nose is not well suited for a short crop style, it becomes personal when a comment about her hair includes borderline unkind words about her singing ability or private life. I am sure you get my drift here.
I totally agree that many times the criticism of the style is directed towards the celebrity but in all fairness it is not always the celebrity OR their stylist that makes the decision. There are so many other factors that many of us can not even begin to imagine.
When I spent two days with Jessica Simpson & Ken Paves last summer I saw a few times where Ken was directed to style her hair a certain way for the magazine shoot because the magazine editor wanted Jessica to look a certain way. I am not sure that Jessica or Ken might have chosen that look on their own accord but as you all know, when a company or magazine is paying for your time and want a certain look, it is their nickel. To a large extent anyway.
And these people are fabulous professionals. For the most part they try to work w/in the guidelines of the people they are working for.
And yes, there are some celebrity stylists that make some big mistakes with their client's hair. As we have all witnessed at various award shows in the past. Sometimes the celebrities insist that the stylists do things to their hair that the stylists might not have wanted to do.
Ultimately it all goes back to who is paying the bill and who has the final say. Sometimes it is hard to know who really made the decision.
As far as who the celebs are that lurk.....email me your phone number and I will be happy to call you & tell you about this (shelton@hairboutique.com).
We have over 20 different & well known celebs that are regular customers of our HB Marketplace. We can't advertise who they are because there are a lot of legal and privacy issues involved. Sephora got sued for major $$$$ for mentioning celebs that shopped at their stores but (the celebs) didn't give them written permission to say that they did. Without their express written permission we can't publicize that info. Even the celebrity stylists & makeup artists that talk to me on a regular basis by phone (Ken Paves, Robert Hallowell, Rita Hazan, Louise O'Connor, Peter Lamas, Jose Eber etc.,) have to get permission from their clients or their agents to talk about their hair before they will talk to someone like me that is writing about it.
Brad Johns got in a lot of trouble a few years back because he was talking about the hair of his celeb clients w/out their approval. A popular celeb stylist that worked on Roseanne's hair upset one of his other TV star clients by talking about her too much. I never published my talk with that California stylist because his press agent was mean, horrible & sent me a terrribly nasty email that I still have framed in my office for when I write my tellall someday. :-)
However, w/out naming names I can definitely say that I know of several stars and celebs that have come to these boards and read the comments. I have also talked to editors from well known celeb oriented magazines who have emailed or called and have mentioned that they visit the boards to see what you all are saying about the celebs. So keep on talking. Just keep in mind that you never know who is reading what you say. :-)
I apologize for making this so long. I also want to thank all of you for your ongoing posts and support. I think you all do a great job of keeping up with the celebs and their ever changing styles. I just wanted you to all know that celebs are people just like all of us and to keep that in mind when making comments that might be hurtful or personal.
Best wishes, Karen

Hi Starburst,
The hair for the celebs that Ken Paves is allowed to talk about include:
Pam Anderson, Lara Flynn Boyle, Jessica Simpson, Ashlee Simpson, Kirsten Dunst, Lucy Liu, Carmen Electra, Carmen Diaz, Christina Applegate, Jennifer Lopez, Mini Driver, Celine Dion, Victoria Principal, Heather Locklear and Anastacia.
Ken only works on female celebs and he doesn't do color....as a rule. Rita Hazan is his dear friends & colorist of choice and together they work on many of the celebs above.
He also works on a lot of other celebs but either he has asked me not to talk about who they are or he is not allowed to talk about who they are because the celebs or their handlers has not given their permission in advance.
I know that Ken has been asked to work on a lot of other celebs but often he is so booked that they can't get on his schedule. He did tell me that he had been asked to work with Goldie Hawn and her daughter Kate Hudson in the recent past but couldn't work the schedule to fit.
The thing about Ken that I think makes him so sought after is that he is a genuinely nice guy w/ no agendas other than to do the very best job he can for his clients. Like all of the other celeb stylists I have met, he doesn't style and tell. He respects his clients and keeps their private lives private. Which is so admirable. I really have gotten to know Ken well over the past year and I have nothing but respect and admiration for his work and what he does. Plus he is so much fun to talk to & he loves what he does. The man works more hours and harder than anyone I know and he still finds time to donate his sparse free time to work with children with cancer and people in need. He is a true prince.
Best wishes, Karen

Karen--
If my comments were too personal, I apologize to both Ms. Dion and the board
I did find her reasons for the short cut interesting, which is why I posted them to the board. I have known a number of new moms who have made similar decisions. And I must say that I admire anyone who has the courage to say that looks are less important than time spent with family. Not that this is the first time Ms. Dion has made such a decision--putting her career on ice for 2 years was a huge professional gamble.
Karen, if you have similar access to other celebs who make drastic decisions about a hair style, I think all of us would like to hear about why they did it.
As to the stylist issue--I know only one personally, and, like Mr. Paves, she would never try to persuade someone to have a hairstyle that didn't suit her just because it was an "in" hairstyle. I don't think that is true of all stylists, though, judging by the number of gals I hear complaining about their latest trip to the stylist and forcing smiles when someone "compliments" them on the new style. I remain convinced that there are more than a few stylists out there who operate in the "Emperor's New Clothes" model ("How could you possibly criticize this style, it's the latest thing!") For that matter, I suspect that there are at least a few who are dedicated to revenge on the female gender under the guise of "fashion."
And JF, gotta agree with your analysis. Great cut, and I respect her for the courage to get her priorities straight, but I still don't think it is the right cut for her. OTOH, if Ms. Dion has the services of a top stylist at her disposal and the budget to don wigs or extensions to achieve whatever look she wants, why not make the hairstyle fit her lifestyle?

Hi Durango,
Your comments were perfectly fine and I certainly didn't see the need for an apology but it was very kind of you to offer it anyway.
It was not my intention to censor the board in any way or point to anyone that has previously posted about Celine. I just wanted to let all know that many celebs & "their people" do read these boards. Actually you should all take this fact as a compliment that they care what you think. I just wanted to alert you all so you can know that info and be mindful.
I actually do have access from time to time to why other celebs have done drastic things to their hair and I would be happy to share it if in fact you would all like to really know. I do read this board every day but I try not to influence the posting in any way so I do keep quiet on some of the topics.
Celeb stylist Peter Lamas actually told me that he was with Mia Farrow and her stylist, Vidal Sasson the day Mia's hair was cut into her famous super crop for Rosemary's Baby so many years ago. Peter is a wonderful stylist and has worked with a stellar group. I asked him why "they" (the stylists) did that to Mia since it came out afterwards (which Mia ultimately confirmed in a book) that Mia's husband Frank Sinatra was quite unhappy with the cut and it probably damaged her new marriage to him.
Peter explained that the producers of Rosemary's Baby wanted that specific chop/cut and they had a very specific reason involving the look of the character and building buzz about the movie. Mia wanted to make a big name on the screen so she agreed. Vidal was simply doing as he was asked and paid to do (the cut cost $3,000). So in this case you could say that whether Mia looked great or not in her super short crop, she went into it because she wanted the role of Rosemary and was willing to do whatever to get it.
I have heard that Jennifer Aniston was not happy with a recent cover shot on W magazine. In fact, she was almost unrecognizable from the Jennifer that we all see all the time. If you didn't know what actually happens behind the scenes of a cover shoot like that or know that the magazine makes or breaks their sales quotas every month on who is on the cover, and how they look and what colors the backgrounds are...you might possibly think that Ms. Aniston should have done something to change the outcome of the cover. I suspect she had little choice. And Ms. Aniston is known to be very professional about protecting her image. I have talked to some of the people that have worked with her and they say she is a very sweet person, just exhausted from the constant talk about her hair since she wants to be recognized for her work as an actress and not just that she has great hair.
Hope that clarifies. Thank you for your post Durango. I enjoyed your analysis and I agree with the fact that if Ms. Dion has the money to alter her look appropriately, why not wear it as she wishes? I know that I would. :-)
Best wishes, Karen

Please do let us know! I think it'd be fascinating to hear soe of the backstories behind the style changes and such. And much more accurate than speculating on our own (though that can be fun at times, too).

First of all, Karen, I'm glad you said you don't like to be an influence on some topics. It would crush me to find out that you liked someone's haircut just because you're pals with the stylist. And since your hair looks so unbelievably gorgeous (last time I checked, anyway), kudos to your stylist.
I have always loved Celine Dion's music... and I certainly enjoyed her long hair. But quite frankly her last haircut made it hard for me to look at her.
Ken, if you're reading this, sometimes you get compliments, sometimes you don't. That's the way it works. I know many females who never seem satisfied with the way their hair is cut, yet they continue to make appointments with the same stylist. In Celine's case, I think the vote is overwhelmingly against her haircut. If Ken cut Celine's hair and we don't like the way she looks, shouldn't he share the blame. I mean, he didn't try to talk her out of it, did he? LOL.
When I read in a Detroit newspaper that Ken had cut a popular Detroit area disc jockey's hair and was going to use the same hairstyle on Celine, I thought, "uh oh!" So for me, it's the style, not the person.
I know many are thinking, "There goes Gord again, that longhair lover." The truth is, I love the hairstyle worn by one of Ken's other clients, Lara Flynn Boyle. He's given her great advice and awesome haircuts as long as I can remember.
All that being said, please, Ken, don't get any ideas about Lucy Liu, OK? Her hair is just fine the way it is.

This all brings up an interesting point that as hair nuts we tend to forget. Not every woman puts her hair or even her looks at the top of her list of important things. Celine is a very busy preformer, wife, mother and business woman.
No hair style can make a pretty woman ugly or a ugly woman beautiful and if you disagree (Gord) then you are ONLY looking at her hair.
I find it refreshing that Celine did what she wanted to do for her and her family.... I sure would hate to have to clip on fake hair and wigs everyday!

Hi Hal,
Great point about ........No hair style can make a pretty woman ugly or a ugly woman beautiful......
A few years ago I met this fashion photographer who does most of his work shooting high paid fashion models and models who do hair shoots (there is no such thing as "hair models"). When I interviewed him about models and how he picks different ones for his shoots and he said "if you take a pig and put a great hairstyle on it, you still have a pig". I was shocked but then I thought about it and started laughing and he said...so many people don't get that point. And yes...he said pig......
Anyway, that quote has stayed with me and what you said Hal is pretty much the same.
Thanks for your wise observation.
Best wishes, Karen
