Anybody watch the pageant last night?
I definitely was in Hair Heaven, although I would have picked Miss USA, Miss Puerto Rico and a few others before Miss Australia.

Shandi is one of the most beautiful women I have seen in my life. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&u=/040602/ids_photos_en/r3998288422.jpg&e=9&ncid=707 - http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&u=/040602/ids_photos_en/r3998288422.jpg&e=9&ncid=707

Speaking of beauty pagaents...they seem to be dominated by ladies with long hair. I know there have been contestans with short hair, but have there been any with short hair who won? I do remember a few years ago, one contestant from Miss USA cut her long hair into a short pixie cut for locks of love after the pageant...anyone know any others?

Miss Australia wore hair hair artificially wavy during the actual pageant, but she was back to straight her for the photo shoot. With a bevy of beauties with long straight (or curled) hair, her wavy look was great strategy that may have helped her stand out from the crowd. Personally, I think she looked kind of trashy on the show, but that had to do with her overall look and swagger, not necessarily her hair. I think she looks better with straight hair, though.
When she won, her hair looked like this, although it was considerably wavier for most of the pageant: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&u=/040602/photos_en_afp/040602172347_gde6pmcr_photo0&e=12&ncid=707 - http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&u=/040602/photos_en_afp/040602172347_gde6pmcr_photo0&e=12&ncid=707
The next day, posing for photographers: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&u=/040602/ids_photos_en/r1964343804.jpg&e=9&ncid=707 - http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&u=/040602/ids_photos_en/r1964343804.jpg&e=9&ncid=707 Enjoy Yahoo's 180-photo slide show while you're there.

Long hair, either extensions or real, is more or less a requirment at Miss Univers pageants, even with the Black contestants.
It's different in Africa. The Miss Africa of two years ago actually had a shaved bald head .
Short and long hairstyles, both traditional and modern "western" hairstyles have become common in African and Caribbean fashion shows and beauty contests.
A variety of hairstyles and lengths have started to become more common in Europe and Asia also recently. This trend of varying hairstyles and lengths hasn't really hit the Americas yet, (It has on the fashion runways but not that much in the beauty paegants).

Look at the bottom of that web page - how did that pic only get a 3.3 rating?
