Can anyone explain these links of Kirsty Hume (Scottish Model) giving herself a haircut.

Did she really do it, and why?
Does anyone know the story behind it?

What courage.

It's nothing too grand -- Kirsty wanted a haircut, and she and the magazine decided to make it into a photoshoot. The hairstylist she went to has a policy of having long-haired clients who want to go short take the first cut, so they feel empowered or something liek that (and maybe to avoid future blame).

(at least that's what I recall reading at the time)

Klaatu is right, her hair was very damaged from years of bleaching, and she wanted a change. I think it was about 3 years ago. She has kept her hair fairly short since.

I seem to recall (vaguely) that this was about 5 years ago now. Does anybody know what happened to her since the cut? I haven't heard anything about her, or seen any modeling pics of her, since.

She still models, I believe. Her hair has gone back forth between short and long since that cut, currently long.

hopefully this means she is growing her back to the length it was before she gave herself a haircut five years ago. She looked excellent with her longer than waist length hair.

It was indeed almost 5 years ago. I saved the article from Vogue for some reason, I think because my hair when I was younger looked a lot like hers!

In the article, Kirsty also said, "I just want to cut out all the damaged hair, go short, have fun with it for a year, and then grow it back again." It seems like she waited longer than that to grow it out. I too hope she continues to grow it longer.

The Vogue article also said - and I disagree - "She's gone as far as she can careerwise with butt-length blonde hair." It seems to me her modeling career was doing just fine with her hair that long, and I don't see why longer than normal hair would necessarily hold a model back.

There are some modeling jobs where the long hair is an asset and some where short hair would be more of an asset. She probably felt she'd done every modeling job she wanted to do with long hair and wanted to try to get some different jobs.

In modeling, women with the same look for a long time become stale. They need to change to get the attention of photographers, designers, et al. If a model keeps her hair in the same style for too long (short or long), she runs the risk of being surpassed by the flavor of the month. A new, different look can cause people to look at her different. Short haired models usually don't keep their hair short for too too long for the same reason.

Rod,

I know little about the modeling world, but what you say sounds generally true. My point is that Kirsty was different. She appeared to be quite successful with her hair waist-length. It was a fairly unique look for a top model, and she was on lots of magazine covers back then. She's been less visible since. It just seems different from, say, Linda Evangelista, who was one of a crowd of models with hair a little below shoulder length, but who really stood out when she got her short haircut. Evangelista went from an unknown to a top model when she got the new look. With Kirsty, she already was a top model, so I don't understand Vogue's comment (not attributed to Kirsty, by the way, but a Vogue writer's comment) that she'd gone as far as she could go with butt-length hair. She'd already gone very far, much farther than most models.
