my hair is driving me nuts. i bleached it blonde, but it was toooo blonde, so i dyed it dark brown. the brown`s mostly faded now so i`m left with a color that`s been described as "dirty brown". it`s okay and all, but i`d like it to be more blonde than brown with blonde tendancies. is hydrogen peroxide okay to use on it? my friend used hydro and it worked really well for her. if so, how does one use it?

Hi Astrid! My dear, you are right about one thing for sure: this certainly COULD be a blooper. PLEASE please please do NOT use peroxide on your hair. First, pure peroxide can actually cause your hair to break off if fragile enough. Secondly, your hair is already damaged from the bleach and dye (all colored hair is damaged--color by its very nature degrades the hair shaft to make the color penetrate and stay.) If you use peroxide you could end up with a completely fried head of hair. Speaking from personal experience, this is NO FUN. It has taken me two full years to grow out my once-lovely brown hair which turned somewhat red when I dyed it in college. Peroxide can bring even more disastrous results. You cannot repair hair once it`s been bleached, dyed or processed. Hair is dead and without cellular regeneration it will still in the exact same damaged state until it grows out and you cut it off. No "reconstructing treatment" can heal hair, regardless of what the bottle says.
If you really cannot stand your hair color, please get thee to a salon and have a professional work with you. He or she can suggest a variety of options, which is infinitely better than just going it alone with peroxide. Perhaps some subtle, all-over highlights would really lighten up your hair without completely recoloring it. Yes, a salon visit costs much more than a bottle of peroxide, but as I`m betting other posters will tell you, fixing a peroxide disaster will cost even more. Please consider going to a colorist--you`ll save yourself a lot of heartbreak, and besides, as Andie McDowell would say, you`re worth it!
Good luck! :-)

don`t do it at home, I once did and my hair turned yellow.
just go to your stylist ans let her put in some light brown and darkblond highlights, that`ll look good I think.

Lyris - You are such a great writer! Always able to add in just the right amount of wit and humor to your very informative posts. I would definitely agree with Lyris and Caro - STAY AWAY from hydrogen peroxide. It turns everything it touches orange. You will have orange hair. I have even seen blondes get orangey....Something to do with the combination of the peroxide and any previous color chemicals in your hair. I know it is hard to not do something....but try to wait it out until you can go to a stylist. If you can`t afford an expensive salon, try a hairschool. We have a great school in my town. The teachers supervise all cut and coloring procedures.
Take care and let us know how it works out.
