how long do the effects of fried hair last?
my little hair problem began about ten months ago.
i have naturally wavy/curly hair -- medium to dark brown in color. i attempted to color it jet black then two days later attempted to straighten it. despite numerous hair cuts -- and even going as far as shaving my head - twice...it's still growing in funny.

once the hair has been shaved, should that eliminate all of the effects of the fried hair?

Ryan, I am not a hairstylist (let's get that out in the open right away) but I do think that once the head is clean shaven (I mean shaving cream right down to the bare scalp) the hair should grow in and not be fried. If you have had this porblem for 10 months, that isn't good. Hopefully the professionals that have more of a clue than I do can give you more detailed info. Good luck.

Hey Ryan I do that all the time
Have my hair fried and then cut it all off
My hair still returns to its normal state
Yours????
Maybe you should consult a doctor

well, i've been to several different hairstylists. they claim that it'll be fine. though, most of those hairstylists hadn't seen my hair when it was fine -- so, i don't know how they can say it's okay now -- if they've never seen what it was like when it was healthy.

i've been to a dermatologist. the lady ran her fingers through my hair -- and despite of how my hair was wanting to cone (my once curly hair, now fried was wanting to have a mohawk effect -- where the hair in the middle was standing taller than the hair anywhere else on my head. And, all of the hair was spikey -- not a trait of curly hair)

she claimed that my hair was fine. but, i think that i should get a second opinion.

i've taken a straight razor to my head (with shaving cream) twice. but, to apparently no avail. how long do the effects of fried hair last?

Ryan hang in there and let it grow. Let it get at least 2, 3, or 4 inches long and go from there. Let the true texture come out. Maybe it has changed on you, the texture, I mean.

Sometimes texture does change, usually during or after hormonal changes....it seems that way after working with hair for over 20 years...

Go see your doctor and ask about getting your thyroid hormone levels checked. If that is off, that could explain why your hair is not growing back the way it used to be. If your thyroid level is low, it can cause your hair to be dry and brittle feeling.

Just a thought...

Look at it this way.  The last time your hair was that short, you didn't know what it looked like.  You are only familiar with your former hair when it was grown out.  It is possible that after growing out it will look more like what it did before.

However it is also possible that through changes in your body chemistry it just doesn't grow like it used too.  In any case, the person who said that if you have shaved the effects of the chemicals are gone was right.  Whatever is growing in now is the result of changes in your body, not chemicals applied 10 months ago.  Whether these changes are the result of a health issue or simply natural changes is something your internist needs to determine.

Unless you just like the shaved look, I would let what is growing in grow.
