i have thick, frizzy, very curly hair. each hair particle is fine in texture, but i have tons of it. when i have it longer, i have it straightened with a perm solution and it works well. now that it's short, i want to let the curls do their thing, but with so much hair, it ends up looking like an afro. afros look good on certain people, but not on a caucasian, 53 yr. old woman with angular features. i bought thinning shears, hoping that i can thin out the hair and still let the curls be "free". how do i use the shears? my hair is only about 1.5 to 2 inches long right now. i am open to suggestions (besides lying down and running the lawn mower over my "mane")

The problem with using a thinning shears is that when your hair grows out, you've got hair of all different lengths. And of course, it's impossible to go back and cut the same individual hairs short again. Isn't there another hair cut that would suit your hair better than thinning it? What about twisting the hair? That seems to be very well suited to thick hair.

Your hairstyle doesn't sound bad to me. I used to sit next to a girl at high school who had dark tight curly hair. She kept it in a tapered cut with these diagonal sideburns. To me, she was no less attractive than the other girls with long curly hair or straight hair.
If you look in the yellow pages or ask around, you should be able to find someone who specialises in curly hair.
