I have thick, black hair. It's completely straight and long so I have to tie it back when I work, but I want to get it curled. Well, I want a wavey look so when I can let it down it won't look so plain and boring.
I'm aiming for something like: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00004RE1Z/qid=1084056743/sr=8-3/ref=pd_ka_3/103-6170372-4863026?v=glance&s=video&n=507846 - http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00004RE1Z/qid=1084056743/sr=8-3/ref=pd_ka_3/103-6170372-4863026?v=glance&s=video&n=507846
If the link doesn't work, hightlight, copy and paste. You can also click on the larger photo.
So what do I do now? I'm a guy so you won't find me periodically visiting a hair stylist, though I regret that now. And how do I explain to whoever I go to what I want? It sounds stupid if I print out the photo and just show them, but that sounds like the best plan.
Thanks, losthostage

get a gentle home perming kit from a drugstore, like Rite Aid (though they did screw me by messing up my change and not refunding it :( )
Get the ones that say for "color-treated or fine hair. That's a milder formula so it won't fry your hair. Go buy huge perming rods, large size for waves. Grab a friend who knows what she is doing or who takes good care of her hair.
Be absolutely positively sure not to leave the perming solution (the stinky one) on your hair too long or you'll get a frizzball.
Good luck, hope you get some big waves.
