The curls wouldn't last as long, but it would be much less damaging and much less expensive than a series of perms. Just think, after you come back from holiday, all your mates' perms will wear out and they may end up with hair that is more difficult to manage, while you still have yours fresh. (I'm sorry that's a harsh thought, but it's true) Don't feel left out, sweetie. Straight hair is still beautiful hair. Maybe you can experiment with different styles for it and start a new trend.
