#1 they should get their hair cut
but as far as styling - I think gel is fine.

If that isn`t sexist, I don`t know what is. How about inquiring what type of hair the guy has before suggesting a haircut. That`s a reason to learn martial artists : to fend off people wielding scissors!
I didn`t go to my prom, those who went told me it sucked anyways.
