Hello,
I have had a perm since I was seven years old. I am now 22 and feel it is time to let the perm go. I have terrible dandruff and my skin has starting peeling at my hair line on my forehead. My beautician of only a few months has told me that I can go straight from getting a perm to getting my hair pressed by just getting it pressed when it's time for my next perm. I have always heard that if you go straight from perming to pressing all of your hair will fall out. Will my hair fall out if I start to press?!? Please let me know because my hair is healthy and long and I do not want it to fall out. Any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated. How should I go about letting go of my perm?!!?

Hi traeboo. I went from a perm to natural too about
a year and a half ago. As long as you only get
your new growth pressed your hair shouldn't fall
out. But you will have to start cutting the old
permed hair off as it starts to break off and that's
normal. "Let's Talk Hair" by Pamela Ferrell is great
book with a lot of helpful info on going natural real
easy. I bought it and it helped me. I don't have no
more perm in my hair and its getting really long and
is a lot thicker and stronger now. Hope this helps
out some.

Hi Trae Boo and Sasha!
I'm not African-American, I'm Hispanic with straight, short hair, but I am glad you ladies are going natural!
I have never permed my hair myself, I have allways worn it natural.
I have seen some beautiful natural styles on Black women and it is better for your hair I'm sure!

I did transfer from perm to pressing without a big cut.
And my hair is not natural anymore since I was told by some stylists and friends.

I went from relaxed to natural about 2 years ago, but my hair was short at the time (like Halle Berry short) so I think that helped alot. Now my hair is shoulder length, thick and much more healthier than it's ever been. I try to use natural products in my hair to keep it moist. No petrolium, no gel or alcohol based products because that drys out the hair. Just give it some time and be patience! Good luck!

I grew out my perm about 9 months ago and didn't go the press and curl route however I have heard that your permed hair will break off...I just kept putting braids and weaves and let it grow until I got sick of it and cut it all off. There are also a lot of hairstyles that will camofloge(that could be spelled wrong?) the new growth like wet sets, twists in the front or braid and let go...patience is the vertue!
