Hi everyone. Id like to get all the facts and opinions possible before I go ahead wth this.

I have dark straight long thick hair. Its a little below my waist. I am thinking of having it cut 3inchs and then layered.

Im thinking of telling the hairdresser that Id like the layers to begin just below my chin and getting longer in steps.

What do you all think??? Also, should I get it thinnned out?

And Is there such thing as too many layers???

Thanks in advance, harv

i`ve been trying to grow my layers out for about three years now. almost there! in my opinion long hair and layers don`t go together- your hair doesn`t look as thick and healthy, the layers fall out of all of your styles, you get split ends up the length as the bottom of your layers split. george michael also has a theory that when you cut sections of your hair, such as bangs or layers, your hair tries to compensate for this with the longer hairs not growing so fast- apparently this has to do with mammals and hair growth. which is why your bangs can grow 1" a month and your hair only 1/2". i personally would not cut layers. but of course, it`s your decision! good luck.

In my humble opinion, layers blow. Why would anyone with beautiful waistlength hair (of the same length) butcher it into layers and thin it out? No wonder I have so many nightmares lately?

Hi Gord,

Yes...layers blow...to quote you. :-) They do take a long time to grow out. The question is WHY someone wants them in the first place. Maybe it will help them grow their hair longer and maybe it will prevent them from cutting their hair shorter in a moment of frustration. Or maybe it is just a bad idea. :-)

Best wishes to all,
Karen

I have to agree with Gord and Karen....what could be more perfect than the sheen from all one length hair? Particularly if it is thick and past the waist - how much more heart stopping can you get?

I have about three inches of layering at the bottom of my hair and i liek them. I would rather see someone with nicely done layers than frizzy, thined out ends.
