I wear my hair in a bun everyday, and recently I heard that they can break your hear off and cause you to go bald! At first I didn't think it was true because my hair is sort of long and I've been wearing it in a bun for a year now. But anyway, does anyone know how I can wear a bun and keep my hair from breaking?  ------------- Kiara G. |

Make sure not to put it in tight, wear a loose bun. Use bobby pins with the coating at the ends. Moisturize the end, u might want to try the baggy treatment with the bun. Make sure to not always wear your bun in the same spot. ------------- Natural BC May 9, 2004 |

Well with the sock and bow bun, it did break my hair off in the center b/c the inside of the bun it exposed all the time and itf something rubs on your bun then the hair is free to break. Do you understand what I typed. I know what I want to say but can't really explain. -------------

I've noticed that when i where a bun, I get more breakage, but I think I'm not doing it right. I do moisturize before hand but I think the weather up north here does a working on it. I wear sock buns as well (thank you Sistaslick). What I do is spray oil sheen on my sock bun everytime I use it. This really works and I have no breakage. ------------- 100% Natural BC - 4/21/07 Love All Gods' Creatures |

I have not expereinced breakage and I try to wear my buns daily but very loosley. I'm guilty of wearing it tight once I'm past 8 weeks post-relaxer because I like for my hairline and crown to be SUPER-STRAIGHT! I moisiturize my sock bun daily with oil. It's a greasy mess but it smells really good. |

yep pretty much what everyone else said... make sure its not too tight and that you are able to touch your chin to your chest without feeling ANY tension at all. You should also be able to roll your neck from side to side without any pulling or tension from your bun. Alternate bun position and keep your ends moisturized and sealed. Never do a donut bun on wet or damp hair because your hair stretches up to 30% of its dry length when wet. If you pull wet hair too taut- when it dries and tries to shrink back to normal length the stress from the pulling and stretching earlier on while wet-- may cause it to snap or weaken. I airdry in a lose ponytail and as it dries- I'll tighten it more and more. Also make sure you are careful about the placement of pins and fabric of your donut itself and scrunchies, etc. For my sock buns, I make the outter most layer with a satiny/silky fabric... something with slip to it. Cotton fabrics will zap moisture from your hair and rub- leading to dryness and breakage. Also hair pins placed in the same spot day in and day out will eventually weaken the hair strand in those areas.

I've done the bun thing with a problem too. I think switching the location and styling techinque helps alot.Less is more. ------------- sweet like honey! |

Yes your hair could possibly break if pulled too tightly and if you wear it in a bun a lot. My cousin wears a bun daily and her nape and hairline are super thin. If you aren't wearing it too tight you should be fine though.

Cinnamon, you can smooth down your new growth without pulling the bun very tightly. What you do is slightly dampen the new growth (so it's easiest to work with) and then use your hands the hairline backwards - in the direction of the bun. Then just tie your hair down with a scarf. The scarf is what does the smoothing. After 15 minutes, remove the scarf and you should have a flat hairline. ------------- Natural -Toothpick-width springs, slightly bigger springs & some frizzy tight waves -Length: 4" past shoulders, 8.5-10.5" total -Post on: NP, BHT, HB, OHJ & NC.
