Hi Ally, Jeff asked me to answer this question since I have been much more focused on the H37 product and how it has impacted my own hair. I am not a chemist. I have spent a lot of time studying hair and know a lot about it but I can not honestly say for sure whether hair is dead or not. I have read conflicting information on that. Some people say hair is dead, some say it is not. I used to believe it was dead but am having some doubts about this. All I can really address about H37 is my own experiences as I do with everything else on Hair Boutique from using ARTec Moisture Pak (which really works for me) to not using blow dryers (which tend to dry out my hair). The same is true with H37. I can only tell you what my experiences have been. I started taking H37 mainly because I was having lots of problems with my hair many months ago. Also, Mike Trobee had approached me about selling H37 on Hair Boutique and I did not want to sell anything unless I had first tried it myself and felt good about it. I actually turned Mike down for some time until I had several months of testing the product. I did a lot of research on Viviscal when it first showed up on the market and decided that I did not feel comfortable enough to sell it on Hair Boutique. So not only did we not sell it, we declined to accept advertising money or an affliates deal with the Viviscal people who were very interested in having Hair Boutique push the product. I have a lot of reasons for my opinion about Viviscal but for now let me focus on H37. I started having lots of problems with my hair several months ago. It got exceptionally dry and brittle and stopped growing (I highlight my hair so I have roots when my hair is growing). It turned out that I had hypothyroidism although I did not know it at that time. My thyroid disease was eventually, after several months, diagnosed through blood tests by a endocrinologist at Baylor Hospital here in Dallas. Not only was my hair a sudden nightmare of tangles and brittleness (really yucky), but my skin was dry and cracking and I had zero energy (which is totally alien to someone like me who never sleeps more than 4 hours a nite). It took awhile for the doctors to diagnose the thyroid problem because it was a borderline case and the blood tests were "inconclusive". However, the endocrinologist eventually found the disease (thank heavens) when my regular family doctor could not. In the meantime my hair was so bad that I even posted a message on Hair Politics that I was thinking of cutting it off because it was so bad. At about that time I started taking H37 to test it and after about 2 weeks I started noting a small change in the texture of my hair. It stopped tangling so badly and felt a little softer in texture. In fact, my hair seemed to be less brittle and softer overall. It is important to note that at that point in time I had not started taking the thyroid meds that I was eventually given by the endocrinologist. However, my hair was slowly but steadily improving and it was obvious to others who were commenting on my hair and how it was changing. Shelley Pryor, my long hair specialist, had been working with me while my hair was so dry and had tried all sorts of deep conditioning treatments on my hair at her salon. She made the comment, after a few weeks of me taking H37, that my hair seemed to be improving for some reason. I told her about the H37 and she was skeptical. Anyway, I kept on taking the H37 and my roots again started to show (new growth) and the rest of my hair continued to just feel a lot softer and thicker. It also just felt stronger and started to look like my hair used to be before the thyroid problems. Jeff took the H37 and his hair seemed fuller and his beard grew like a weed. He had to trim it after just a few weeks rather than a few months. I also asked Jane Bullock to take the H37 and her hair grew really fast. We know because she normally goes to Shelley every 3-4 weeks for a trim and was going in every 2 weeks instead. Shelley told me that it was ridiculous how fast Jane's hair was growing and she should not be taking hair vitamins because her hair was growing too fast to hold its bedhead shape. Shelley has been so impressed with the changes in my hair texture and the speed of Jane's growth that the last time I went to see her (about 3 weeks ago) she insisted on trying H37. Yes, I know that it is supposed to only help the new hair but I do know for a fact that my hair seemed to "come back" from dryness and brittle texture to full and soft and as good, if not better, than ever. I can not begin to tell you have frantic I was about my hair. My post on Hair Politics generated a lot of upsetting email responses from people telling me that I should not cut my hair...no matter what. Well my hair was horrible before the vitamins and I was really getting tired of having so much hair in my brush and it feeling really yucky all the time. I can totally relate to people who have hair loss issues and problems with hair dryness. I know that you are not specifically doubting Jeff and I about H37 and just want to avoid the same issues you had with Viviscal. I understand that you are just concerned about the claims of H37. I appreciate the opportunity to talk about H37 andy my experiences. One thing I have to say is that I will not guarantee that H37 works for everyone. That is why we have the 100% money back guarantee. No questions asked and that is how we do it. I can also tell you that in all the months that we have been carrying the H37 product we have only had a handful of people ask for their money back, which we promptly provided. The reasons that they returned the product were varied and only 1 person felt H37 did not have any noticeable impact. We had returns mostly because people experienced niacin flushes or they could not take the pills because they tend to be larger than most vitamins, although they have been sized down considerably as a result of this issue. To be honest I actually can not explain exactly why my hair improved but Shelley and Jeff and my friends can attest to the fact that it was originally a mess before I took the H37. I also know that my hair definitely changed and there is no other explanation than the H37. I had done nothing else to cause any change in my hair at that point in time. My hair did improve even more about 3 months after I started taking the thyroid meds, but there was a period of time where I was just taking H37 and there was a significant difference in the texture and feel and overall condition of my hair. The only other time I took vitamins that were specifically for hair was about 8 years ago when a lot of my hair fell out when I was on a "fasting" type of diet. My hair stylist during that phase had me drinking the Nature's Plus Ultra Hair Shakes which helped somewhat. I will tell you honestly that I don't know for a fact that hair is dead or not. I used to believe that it was dead but then recently a hair expert told me that the hair will respond to changes in diet and other factors because it is not really dead and the whole body responds to a variety of factors, including changes in diet and stress. I don't have the scientific details or evidence. All I know is that the H37 works really well for me and it worked well for Jane and Jeff. Just like everything else, it will not work for everyone and we don't even hint of a promise that it will. If anything, we tell people strongly not to order the product if they want a 100% guarantee because we can not give that in all honesty. It works for most people. I can promise that. I also tell people about the great results I get with Aveda's Beautifying Oil. I have had people write and tell me that it makes their hair too oily. The H37 is the same thing. It works for me and I totally believe in it. It may not work for you or everyone else and I am very open and upfront about that. If it doesn't and you bought some, we will refund your money, no questions asked. I personally would not feel OK about selling anything that I did not personally take and feel good about. However, I have learned from my time with Hair Boutique that it is important to make a big deal about the fact that nothing, no hair product or supplement, ever works well for everyone. Does H37 only help the new hair grow? That has not been my personal experience. Does it make hair stronger and healthier? It seemed to for me. Will it work for everyone? No, absolutely not. However, the only way people can find out is to experience their own results. Is it safe? My doctors have told me yes, it is very safe. Some people have questioned the amount of niacin in the product. I believe that everyone, no matter what, should consult their doctors before taking the product. If there is a history of heart disease or blood pressure problems, the person should ask their doctors if the product is OK for them. This is true with everything. There is always an exception to every case. A friend of mine who has heart disease can't eat a lot of soups because of the high sodium content. Who would begin to think that soup was dangerous to health? Anything that we ingest can be a problem for some people. However, it is usually a tiny minority, just like my friend who can't eat most soups. If anyone reading this has scientific documentation on hair and whether it is dead or not I would love to have a copy. I have been getting a lot of conflicting info on the topic and would love to get more research materials. Thanks for your question. I hope that if you have more you will post them here.
