Hi,

I have a question about my long hair that is falling out. I read Karen`s article about TE & hair loss from dieting but I eat really healthy and don`t diet and my hair, which is below my shoulders, started falling out after my 3rd baby was born in November. I did not have this with my other two kids. I am wondering if this is natural or I will lose all my hard grown length? Any suggestions?

I`d really appreciate any hints!
Joely

Hi Joely,

Post-partum shedding is perfectly normal. It usually begins between 4 to 6 months after childbirth and lasts an average of 2 to 4 months. It`s caused by hormone levels returning to normal after childbirth. Because of those hormones, pregnant women don`t shed (why many women report great hair while pregnant). After childbirth and the normalization of hormone levels, you may shed that hair you held onto for 9 months. It can seem like all of your hair is falling out. It isn`t :-) . You usually end up right where you started before your pregnancy.

My own experience was this: first child, shed the normal amount of time; second child, shed the normal amount of time; third child, shed for almost 8 months and ended up with thinner hair than I had before :-( . My hair was long for all three children, and is mid-back now. I don`t know why things were different for my third child (or yours).

Some people report less shedding while taking MSM. I started taking it after I weaned by son. The shedding did cease, but it had gone on for so long the cycle may have ended on it`s own. I don`t know for certain.

HTH!!
