I'm planning on eventually getting back to my natural colour, a dk blonde/brownish colour, and I'm wondering how far black dyes can/will fade on their own (colour and timeframe), without bleaching and the like?  Specifically Feria (the 'brown-black' black), but also black dyes in general.

It's been ages since I dyed my hair black, and it was with Nice and Easy, but I don't remember it ever fading noticably.  It was a very inky-black, though.  I'm not sure whether brownish-black would fade to a dark brown eventually or not.

Feria has a reputation for not fading, too.

If your hair is fine and porous, it will fade back to a dark brown. When I used Fierra dark brown the fading color was not very pretty, rather dull, washed out kind of brown. The black may do the same. If your hair is not porous it will be a different story.

My hair is *very* fine, but not sure about porous...off-hand, I'd say 'no' on that one as it's in good condition, overall.

I guess I'll add that I'm presently at five months since the last time it was dyed, and it's down to about a dark brown (lightest is med-dark brown, darkest is brown-black), and I am actively attempting to fade the colour further (mainly with olive oil).  But...hmm....

So, dark brown is truly the lightest I can hope for it to fade on its own?

At five months you've probably achieved most of the fading that you're going to.

I think that to have any chance to get your old color back you'll have to do several applications with colorfix, than follow up with a toner.

As far as I know, colorfix does not lift Feria dyes (most being direct dyes, I believe). Hence why I was wondering how long I should wait before resorting to some bleaching.

And I guess it's as light as it's going to get more or less 'on its own'.  Somewhat figured it had already gotten there.

I've heard that Colorfix does not work well on Feria.  I've also heard that bleaching can be disasterous on it if you're not careful.  I did think one of the other kinds of color strippers might work on Feria, but I don't remember which one.
