i have asked several people this question and no one seems to
know-it seems like it would be pretty straightforward, here goes:

i want to touchup my highlights that were done with foil. i know
that the bleach should not be pulled through to the ends because of
breakage, but how do i 'blend' the new highlights with what has
been done so that there is no noticeable separation?

i notice that the stylist does brush the bleach down to the ends-kind
of lighter towards the end, but i am not sure of the technique.   

i have to believe that she is putting bleach on some of the ends
because it always looks refreshed when she does it.

can anyone help? thank you in advance....

If it is bleach and not a high lift tint, it should never be overlapped at all. When I do bleach touch ups I don't even apply the bleach all the way to the line of color demarcation because bleach swells as it processes so it will get to all of the unbleached hair if you leave it about an 1/8" away.

Bleach removes color from your hair so if it is already bleached (pigment removed) bleaching it again isn't going to refresh it, only remove more color making it lighter every time.  When you get a touch up and no longer see the the darker roots it does tend to make all of the hair look "brighter".  I can't think of any reson that the older hair would be refreshed unless she is applying a toner which is applied all over and would refresh the ends as well.

would you recommend using a cap? i have been trying the foils, but
it gets a little hard to manage.

my highlights are heavy, if i pull through every hole with a thick
hook will that give me the same look?

Using a cap will not give you the same effect as foils. The reason foils are used is a control issue, you can pick exactly where the hilites are going.  With a cap you're working blind, whatever hair is pulled thru the cap is all you have to work with.

Also if you're doing this at home with a home product your results may not match what was done in the salon.
