          | Hello, I have a question... I haven't been here in quite some time.  My hair is just below BSL, I had quite a bit cut off of it, it was damaged from the highlites I had been getting. I know that it is not good to wash hair daily, but it seems if I do not, by mid second day my hair is really oily. I do not put conditioner on the top of my head, and it is very rare that I use any products up there.   What can I use to help make my hair not noticably oily?  I would like to be able to go a a couple of days without washing it as it is not good for it.  I do not want it to look oily though for work.  I normally wear my hair down, or pulled up in a loose bun.
I appreciate any input!  I'm using Redken Allsoft Shampoo and Conditioner.

          | You may not be the type of person that can go for very long.  I
tried washing my hair every 3 days, and it just never worked out even
after 2 months of trying, so I wash my hair every other day.  Some
can go a week without, I cannot.
You may want to try diluting your shampoo (suggested by Dave.
Your dilution amount may vary, up to 75% water).  This helps
create more of a balance on your scalp by not stripping off so much oil
when you wash.  It still removes all visible oil, your hair DOES
look clean after you wash with dilute shampoo, but it doesn't over
strip the oils - which may cause your scalp to overproduce oil
afterwards.

Those are heavy silicone products, you may help avoid damage by clarifying once in awhile (if you don't already).

          | Why not try just rinsing your hair with just water? My experience is that it is not drying, but gets rid of sweat and dirt and makes it fresher at the roots. I like standing for five minutes or so in a hot shower, and it freshens my hair right up.

          | I'll have to try diluting the shampoo and see if that will work.  I never had to before, but maybe the water could be playing a part in it too.  I'm no longer in Germany, but in Virginia. I will also try the just rinsing part to see if it will help. It definately cannot hurt! I used to be able to go 2 days, but that was a while ago. |

          | As boar bristle brushes spread the oil from root to tip, you might try one of those. It not only makes your hair appear cleaner but it moisturized, also. :)

          | Hi Laine!
Welcome back!  Good to "see" you again.  Sorry to hear you
had so much damage.  Happier no-highlight days ahead...?

The shampoo dilution (mentioned by Susan W) really does work so
well.  Why not give it a try? If it doesn't work for you after
trying several times, then you can revert back to your usual
method.  And the acicid (vinegar diluted in water) final rinse can
help tremendously if your water is hard.

The BBB method of spreading the sebum (mentioned by GoldieLocks) is another excellent suggestion.

          | Laine! Welcome back stateside!
I used to put my hair into a ponytail, then pull out the top/sides and shampoo just those. It's easier than it sounds. So the part that needs it the most gets shampood and the back/ends don't. It's worth a try. It can even be done in the kitchen sink, but I preferred to use the shower to do this.

How are you? Nice to see you here.

| I used to shampoo almost daily, but since I've been diluting, it just doesn't get oily nearly as fast as it used to.  I'm down to 1 to 2 shampoos a week now.  And my hair is really staying CLEAN. I kind of think with the diluted shampoo, I'm getting it rinsed more thoroughly and any shampoo left in the hair will attract dirt, oil, etc. Ponytails and updos help too since you are not manipulating your hair much, you don't over stimulate the oil glands. Rinses with red wine vinegar and filtered water once or twice a month or whenever it feels like it needs it, helps, too. I use a thick conditioner and have been diluting it too, with nice results.  I then oil the ends sparingly with jojoba oil. This is working well for me but it took almost a year of experimenting before I found what I really like. HTH, |

          | I tried to dilute my shampoo in a new bottle, and I just made a lot of bubbles! I am going to try using the shampoo again, to see if it had had some time to mix together.   When I use my conditioner I do not put it on the top of my head, only on the ends of my hair, I learned that here a few years ago. Thanks for the comments. |

          | Hi. How long did you give every-other-day washing a try? When I first
did this, I was grossed out by how incredibly lank my hair was on the
second day. It was really a fright--dry on the ends (I was still
growing out old damage from coloring) but grease on top of the
dryness...hard to explain. BUT I was determined to make my hair "learn"
how to accept this mode of washing (based on what I had learned on
another site) so I would wear it up on the second day. That way the
true extent of the ickiness would mostly be hidden from the general
public.
I found that within about a month to a month and a half, my hair looked
just fine on that second day. It seems that hair will overproduce oil
if it is "afraid" of coming dryness. In other words, shampoo tends to
strip off too much oil. So your scalp gets into a pattern of
overproducing oil. But as time goes by, the scalp's reaction calms down
once it realizes another "stripping" isn't coming right away. So you
might want to try diluting as posters said above (so there isn't as
much stripping), and going that second day with your hair up. Give it a
few weeks and see what happens.

          | Mels, I haven't given it that much time.  It is blatenly obvious when I do not wash my hair everyday. It is dull, flat, etc.  Unfortunately putting it up makes it look even worse for me.  If I wasn't working then I could just put it up in a hat to get my hair used to it, that that is not an option for me. Thanks for the tip though. |

          | I wash every other day and condition every day.  I used to wash
every day but I got into the habbit of every other day.  I have
tried to wash every third day but my hair gets really greasy and nasty
I can't handle it. |

          | A friend of mine manages to get by washing her hair once a week. Her
hair is highlighted regularly but soft and in absolutely gorgeous
condition. I don't know how she does it. Natural oils honestly do make
the best conditioner. I've been trying to go 5 days without washing my
hair for the past three months and it's very hard. One thing I've found
is that I can clean my roots with whipped egg whites on day 3 or so and
that refreshes them completely while leaving the longer parts untouched
so I can pull through more natural oils and let it sit longer.
Basically, I just apply whipped egg whites to my roots (whip them until
they form white, hard peaks), massage it for 5 mins, and then rinse it
out in the shower. it totally gets rid of the oil at the roots.

          | oh if I had to wash my hair every day or even every other day I think I would not wear it as long! In fact, having to brush, dry, and style that often is what led to many a rash haircut....I usually go three or four days between washes. Sometimes I wear braids, a hat, or a bandana on the last day. |

          | talcum powder works well, but my hair is dark and it really shows up no
matter how much i try and brush it out. the colored "dry shampoos" by
Bumble and Bumble (basically colored talcum powder) look great, but
they're expensive. Wish I were blonde, heh. |

          | I wash my hair daily with conditioner, but I have just found a really gentle shampoo where I can actually shampoo everyday if I want, because I use a lot of product as leave-in, and sometimes a CO wash just doesn't get it. You could try finding a gentle shampoo that doesn't strip your hair so you can shampoo everyday or you can try doing CO washes to see if that helps...maybe every other day.
