Hello!  I have long (bra-strap length) color-treated hair that is naturally slightly wavy, but, not quite curly, and not straight either.  It's sort of in-between the two textures.  Unfortunately, it has a tendency to frizz quite easily.  Over the years, I've been wearing it straight most of the time, because when I attempt to wear it wavy, it looks frizzy and umkempt.  I've been using a flat-iron for about 3 years, and I need to find an alternate way to style my hair.  The use of a flat-iron over the years has made my hair very dry.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can make my wavy/frizzy hair more curly, so that I can ease up on straightening, but still have my hair look nice?

Any product recommendations and/or general advice are welcomed and appreciated.

Thanks!

Oh, I wish I would have seen you post sooner!  We sound like we have similar hair.  Have you read the Curly Girl book or Ouidad's books?  I think that Curly Girl is better, personnally, because Lorraine (spelled wrong?), the author, has affordable ways to care for curly hair.

Wash your hair in the coolest water you can stand.  Avoid products with alchohol because they dry you out and only create more frizz.  After you get out of the shower, pat your hair as dry as you can get it with a towel, but DONT wrap it up.  Once hair gets dry enough, use a clear gel w/out any alchohol.  Scrunch it through your hair and let it dry naturally.

I personally reccomend trying to wash with conditioner only for at least two weeks, but if your hair reacts by getting greasy, you should try the different methods of washing on Anais' sight.

Sorry no one posted sooner

Hello Char!  Thanks for your reply.  I haven't read Curly Girl, or any of Ouidad's books because I was always unsure if I should treat my hair in the same manner women with curly hair do, because my hair is not exactly curly, it's more wavy than anything.  I will try the tips you mentioned though.  The only part I'm reluctant about is not towel drying my hair with the towel wrapped on top of my head.  My hair is very thick and porous, so, it retains a lot of water.  Even after towel drying, it is still quite wet.  We'll see...  I'm definitely going to wash with the coldest water that I can stand.  Hopefully, this, coupled with an alcohol-free gel will help minimize the frizz, and make the waves into more of a curl.

One more thing - you mantioned that I should air dry after washing.  You don't think that using a blow-dryer with a diffuser would help make the waves more curly and defined?

Thanks again!

Sorry, I have been away for a while.  I would say use a diffuser on warm setting but then switch to cool when your hair is almost dry so you don't burn anything.  Your hair sounds exactly like mine!  I had trouble with letting my hair dry at first, but then I got used to it.  After I get dressed, I drape a towel around my shoulders and eat breakfast/ put make up on.  By that time, my hair is usually dry enough to leave the house.  If not, I blow dry it on cool for about two min.  and then I'm good to go.
